Breaking news! BYD plans to develop self-driving chips

According to people familiar with the matter, BYD will independently develop a dedicated chip for intelligent driving. The project is led by BYD's semiconductor team and has issued a request to the design company. If the progress is fast, it is expected to be tape-out by the end of the year.

In addition, BYD is recruiting a BSP (board support package, board-level support package) technical team. The role of BSP is to provide a standard interface to the operating system running on the chip.

It is understood that BYD actually established its own semiconductor team about 20 years ago and has successively launched products such as IGBT chips, automotive-grade MCU chips, and analog IC chips. However, BYD has not been involved in autonomous driving chips and digital cockpit chips in the field of intelligence.

In recent years, intelligence has gradually become the core competitive direction of car companies, and BYD has also begun to adjust its business focus. BYD Chairman Wang Chuanfu said, "The first half of new energy vehicles is electrification, and the second half is intelligence. In the field of intelligence, BYD will, like in the field of electrification, integrate all core technologies and conduct full verification."

After the global "chip shortage" began in 2020, in addition to the increased demand from many domestic chip companies, car companies also began to try to pay attention to chip research and development. Since 2021, traditional car companies including Geely, Great Wall, SAIC and Dongfeng have increased investment in the chip field.

Car companies that have also recently announced the development of self-driving chips include Ideal and Xpeng. In 2021, Wu Xinzhou, Xpeng Motors' vice president of autonomous driving, told foreign media that it is studying various technologies including autonomous driving chips.

In addition, Li Xiang, the founder of Li Auto, also announced this year that he would develop self-driving chips and established Sichuan Li Xiang Technology Co., Ltd. whose business scope includes chip design.

Geely Automobile, also a traditional car company, also launched a 7nm process cockpit chip-Longying No. 1 at the end of 2021 through Xinqing Technology, a subsidiary of Geely Holdings.

However, several chip company executives have said that it is extremely difficult to make chips that can support their own car production in the short term. At present, there are only a handful of car companies that have successfully developed self-driving chips and achieved large-scale pre-installation, and Tesla is one of the precedents.
