In 1998, the People's Government of Minhang District and the former Shanghai Medical University jointly established the Fifth Hospital of the city. With the merger of the former Shanghai Medical University and Fudan University into the new Fudan University, the current hospital is also known as the "Shanghai Fifth People's Hospital Affiliated to Fudan University" ”, a Class III B non-profit public hospital. The hospital currently covers an area of ??5.81 hectares (about 90 acres) and has a construction area of ??60,000 square meters. The hospital has 630 approved beds and 800 open beds.
