It is located at the "East Gate" of Guangdong Province, bordering Fujian Province in the east and the South China Sea in the south. It is located at the easternmost end of the coastal economic belt in Guangdong Province, between Shantou and Xiamen Special Economic Zone, and it is the intersection point connecting the economic zone on the west side of the Taiwan Strait and the Pearl River Delta.
