Jiaonan was originally a county-level city under the jurisdiction of Qingdao, Shandong Province, located in the south of Qingdao. However, in 20 12, with the approval of the State Council, Jiaonan City merged with the original Huangdao District to form a new Huangdao District, also known as Qingdao West Coast New District, which was directly under the jurisdiction of Qingdao City.
