What is plankton in the ocean?
Marine plankton is a marine organism suspended in the water layer and often moves with the current. Such creatures lack developed motor organs and have no or only weak swimming ability; Most individuals are so small that their structures can only be seen clearly under a microscope. Only a few species of individuals are very large, such as the arctic jellyfish, with a maximum diameter of 2 meters.
There are many kinds, belonging to most categories of plant kingdom and animal kingdom; A large number, widely distributed, almost all over the world. 1887, German plankton scientists V and Henson first used the word "plankton" to refer to plankton. This word comes from Greek, which means wandering.
Introduction to biology
When seawater is observed under an ordinary optical microscope, many strange little creatures will be found. Some can move, called zooplankton; Some immobile plants are called phytoplankton, also called microalgae. Some smaller individuals can only see clearly under an electron microscope. They make a living by decomposing organic matter. We call them marine bacteria.
Plankton is a group of vagrants, drifting with the tide all day long and everywhere; Have no fixed place of residence. Most of them are hermits, and few people can see their true colors clearly, because they are too small, only a few tenths or a few percent of1mm. Although these creatures are insignificant in size, they play an important role in the whole marine life.
Species composition
Plankton includes phytoplankton and zooplankton.
Phytoplankton: the species are relatively simple, mostly unicellular plants, among which diatoms are the most, and dinoflagellate, green algae, cyanobacteria, Chlorella and so on.
Zooplankton: There are many kinds and complicated structures, including invertebrates of most classes, such as protozoa, coelenterates (various jellyfish), rotifers, crustaceans, gastropods (pteropods and heteropods), chaetognathus, lower chordates (planktonic crustaceans and sea bream) and floating eggs and larvae of various animals.
Crustaceans, especially copepods, are the most important. There is also a class of planktonic unicellular organisms, which have the basic characteristics of plants and animals (active flagella, autotrophic and heterotrophic). Botanists classify it as dinoflagellate, while zoologists classify it as protozoan flagellate.
