What is PDP?
Plasma display panel (PDP) is a new generation of display equipment using plasma flat panel technology, which has developed rapidly in recent years. Plasma color TV is a high-tech color TV made by plasma display technology. The main feature of this color TV is that the image is really clear and realistic, which can be seen in outdoor and ordinary indoor light, and can provide a large screen angle of view in any environment. Moreover, the screen is very thin, with a thickness of only cm, which is convenient to install and is a real high-end color TV product.
With the emergence of multimedia and high definition television (HDTV), display technology has been developed unprecedentedly. Among many display modes, plasma display panel (PDP) has attracted wide attention for its excellent performance. PDP has many excellent characteristics, such as wide viewing angle, long service life, fast refresh speed, high light efficiency and brightness, easy to make large screen, wide working temperature range and so on. The digital gray scale technology used in color PDP can make the gray scale of the image exceed 256, which can meet the requirements of displaying 16-bit or 24-bit true color.
1 working principle of plasma display
Plasma display is a display device using gas discharge. This screen uses a plasma tube as a light-emitting element. A large number of plasma tubes are arranged together to form a screen. Each chamber corresponding to each plasma is filled with neon and xenon. When a high voltage is applied between the electrodes of the plasma tube, the gas in the plasma tube cavity sealed between two layers of glass will generate ultraviolet light, thus exciting the red, green and blue phosphors on the flat panel display to emit visible light. As a pixel, each ion tube combines the brightness and color changes of these pixels to produce images of various tones and colors, which is similar to the display image tube. Compared with other display methods, plasma technology has obvious differences and is one step ahead in structure and composition. Its working mechanism is similar to that of ordinary fluorescent lamps, and the three-layer structure of plasma display is shown in figure 1. Generally, it consists of three layers of glass plates. The inside of the first layer is coated with vertical conductive material, the middle layer is a bulb array, and the surface of the third layer is coated with horizontal conductive material strips. To light a light bulb at an address, a higher voltage should be applied to the corresponding line first. After the light bulb is lit, the brightness of the neon light bulb can be maintained with a lower voltage. Just turn off a light bulb and reduce the corresponding voltage. The cycle time of the light bulb switch is15 ms. By changing the control voltage, the plasma panel can display different gray-scale graphics. At present, color plasma panels are still in the stage of rapid development.
The color image of plasma TV is composed of a single phosphor pixel, so the image is bright, bright, clean and clear.
Characteristics of 2 PDP plasma display
Plasma display has the following outstanding characteristics.
(1) brightness and high contrast.
According to calculation, plasma TV has high brightness and high contrast, and the contrast reaches 500: 1, which can completely meet the needs of eyes. The brightness reaches 330/850 nits (cd/m2), which is much higher than the 250 nits (cd/m2) of ordinary TV. So its color reproduction is very good.
(2) The pure plane image has no distortion.
The RGB light-emitting grids of PDP are evenly distributed in the plane, so that the image of PDP will not be distorted even at the edge. However, in flat CRT color TV, it is difficult to control the edge scanning speed without distortion.
(3) Ultra-thin design and ultra-wide viewing angle.
Due to the display principle of plasma TV, the thickness of the whole machine is much lower than that of traditional CRT and projection TV. The body thickness of PDP402 plasma TV is only 7.8 cm, ranking the international leading level. In this way, consumers can hang the PDP on the wall or put it on the table according to their own preferences, which greatly saves room space and looks neat, beautiful, scientific and fashionable. In addition, PDP402 plasma TV is a self-luminous device with the same viewing angle as CRT traditional color TV.
(4) It has a complete input interface, which can connect almost all signal sources on the market.
In order to connect various signal sources, PDP402 plasma TV has DVD component interface, computer monitor standard VGA/SVGA interface, S terminal, HDTV component interface (Y, Pr, Pb) and so on, and can receive various signal sources such as power supply, computer, VCD, DVD and HDTV.
(5) It has good anti-electromagnetic interference function.
Compared with the traditional CRT color TV, because its display principle does not need the help of electromagnetic field, external electromagnetic interference, such as motor, speaker and even geomagnetic field, has no influence on the image of PDP402 plasma, unlike CRT color TV, which will cause image deformation, discoloration or image tilt due to the influence of electromagnetic field. The simplest comparison method is to compare PDP plasma TV and CRT TV with 90-degree rotation on site.
(6) Environmental protection and no radiation.
PDP402 plasma TV adopts good electromagnetic shielding measures in structural design, and its front screen environment can also play the role of electromagnetic shielding and infrared radiation prevention, which has little harm to eyes, more effectively protects the health of you and your family, and has good environmental protection characteristics.
(7) Good heat dissipation performance and no noise.
Poor heat dissipation performance has always been a technical difficulty that puzzles the development of plasma TV, and TCL Ace has completely solved this problem through technical research, completely consuming the accent trouble caused by the fan cooling system of plasma TV in the market.
It has been proved that plasma displays have higher technical advantages than traditional picture tubes and LCD liquid crystal displays. These advantages are as follows:
(1) Compared with direct-view CRT color TV:
PDP displays are smaller, lighter and have no X-ray radiation.
Because the structure of each light-emitting unit of PDP is exactly the same, there will be no geometric distortion of images common in CRT.
The brightness of PDP screen is very uniform-there are no bright and dark areas; However, the brightness of the traditional picture tube-the brightness in the center of the screen is always higher than the brightness around it.
PDP is not affected by magnetic field and has better environmental adaptability.
There is no focusing problem on the PDP screen. Therefore, the problem of defocusing in some areas of the picture tube due to poor focus or long time has been solved, and the picture tube will not appear color shift.
Plane can completely improve the distortion and color purity change at the corner of large screen. High brightness, large viewing angle, full color and high contrast make PDP images clearer, brighter and more ideal, and make traditional TV amazing.
(2) Compared with LCD:
PDP has high display brightness, and the screen brightness is as high as 150LUX, so it can enjoy large-screen video programs in bright environment.
Good color reproduction and rich gray scale can provide exceptionally bright, uniform and smooth pictures.
PDP has a wide field of vision, and the viewing angle of PDP is as high as 160 degrees. The viewing picture of ordinary TV set above 160 degrees has been seriously distorted, while the viewing angle of LCD is only about 40 degrees, which is incomparable with the effect of PDP.
Fast response to rapidly changing images. In addition, the flat and light appearance of PDP makes its advantages more obvious.
3 the development of plasma display
The plasma display was invented by two professors from the University of Illinois in the United States in 1964. In the early 1970s, the mass production of 10 inch 5 12 line monochrome PDP was realized. In the mid-1980s, American Photonisc ISC Company developed a 60-inch monochrome PDP with a display capacity of 2048×2048. However, it was not until the 1990s that key technologies such as colorization, brightness and life span were broken through, and color was put into practical application.
1993, Fujitsu of Japan first produced color PDP with 2 1 inch and 640×480 pixels, and then Mitsubishi, Panasonic, NEC, Pioneer and WHK of Japan successively launched their own color PDP, and the resolution reached the practical stage. The resolution of 55-inch color PDP developed by Fujitsu Company reaches 1920× 1080 pixels, which is completely suitable for the display requirements of HDTV. In recent years, South Korean companies such as LG, Samsung, Hyundai, BenQ in Taiwan Province Province, China, Chunghwa Picture Tube, etc. have all stepped out of the research and development stage and established 40-inch pilot production lines. Plasmaco in the United States, Philips in the Netherlands and Thomson in France have all developed their own PDP products. 1998 Philips introduced a 42-inch wall-mounted PDP widescreen color TV with refreshing picture quality and sound.
In recent years, PDP plasma display panel has developed rapidly, and its market development potential is huge, which has attracted special attention from major manufacturers around the world. After years of development, especially in the last five years, the key technologies of PDP have basically broken through. At present, the problem is how to reduce the cost, improve the performance and realize the big finger production.

The current problem is how to reduce the cost, improve the performance and realize mass production.
Sony, NEC, Fujitsu, Panasonic and other manufacturers have developed their own PDP products. However, the price of PDP is still very high at present. At present, PDP is mainly used for information display and automatic monitoring system in public places such as airports, railway stations, exhibition venues, corporate seminars, academic conferences and teleconferencing.
The World Bad enough Championship in June 2002 greatly promoted the popularization of plasma, and the legislation of high-definition digital TV broadcasting being initiated by the US Congress will accelerate this process. In order to meet the requirements of American policy, multinational companies in home appliance industry reduced the production of CRT TV and increased the production of plasma in HDTV. This trend is rising from the United States and heading for Europe and the Asia-Pacific region, and the era of plasma popularization is just around the corner.
4 Development of China Plasma Display Panel
China's plasma color TV industry has just started, but it has developed very rapidly in recent years through introduction, digestion and absorption. Rainbow Group Corporation and Xi Jiaotong University cooperated with Russian National Institute of Gas Discharge Devices to develop 40-inch color PDP products with independent intellectual property rights. Rainbow Group established a color PDP test line of 40 inches or more in Beijing, and plans to carry out trial production in 2002. TCL, Hisense and Skyworth have successively launched their own PDP products, and Skyworth has also recently launched high-definition plasma color TV sets and 50-inch and 60-inch plasma products, which indicates that China has entered a new stage in plasma display manufacturing technology. Hisense signed a letter of intent with Beijing Gome, large and medium-sized businesses to order 42-hour digital plasma TV for 300 million yuan. TCL plans to realize the independent development and production of all plasma TV modules before 2004, and realize the joint development and production of monitors through joint ventures and cooperation with foreign capital. It is planned that before 2005, 300-500 million yuan will be invested in the research and development and production of plasma TV, and at least three production lines will be built to achieve an annual output of 300,000 sets of complete machines and 300,000 sets of components. Skyworth's plasma strategy for the next five years is 654.38+10,000 units in 2002,/kloc-0.50 million units in 2003 and 500,000 units in 2007.
On September 26th, 2002, the Ministry of Information Industry held a seminar on the development strategy of China plasma industry. The seminar brought together relevant experts and business representatives to discuss the possible problems in the development of plasma color TV in China. At the meeting, an administrator of the Ministry of Information Industry proposed to incorporate PDP into the digital TV system. If this proposal is adopted by the relevant departments, it means that in the near future, the state will give greater policy and financial support to plasma color TV sets. The meeting drew the following conclusions: from the perspective of industrial structure adjustment, developing plasma color TV industry is the need of upgrading the color TV structure in China; From a technical point of view, plasma color TV is an ideal choice for the future digital TV era; From the demand of the exhibition, once the price/performance ratio of plasma color TV is accepted by consumers, the market capacity of plasma color TV will be further developed; In terms of production capacity, China's R&D foundation and manufacturing capacity have begun to take shape.
On June 65438+1October 65438+July, 2002, China Electronic Video Association held another joint venture meeting to discuss the development path of plasma industry in China. Government officials, representatives of joint ventures, experts and scholars attending the meeting agreed that the plasma color TV industry in China is still in its infancy, and the market situation of plasma color TV will be relatively stable in the past two years.
Plasma TV sets are still in the initial stage of market growth in China, and there is still a long way to go before they are fully mature. The problems are mainly manifested in the following aspects:
Technical obstacles: Most technologies are still in the hands of foreign enterprises, and technology is still the biggest shortcoming of China enterprises. However, with the increase of R&D efforts of China enterprises, the technological disadvantage will fade;
Cognitive impairment: As a brand-new TV product, plasma color TV is still relatively unfamiliar to quite a few people. Accepting this product requires market cultivation and consumer education from both enterprises and society;
Price barrier: the price of plasma color TV sets remains high for a long time, which is very unfavorable for entering consumer families. Now, the price has dropped a lot. However, it should be admitted that the price is still relatively high.
