Are materials science and engineering majors unpopular? What are the employment prospects and salary?

Materials science and engineering are basic disciplines, and they are never unpopular majors. Although the names of affiliated majors set by different schools are different, they can be roughly divided into four directions: polymer, metal, inorganic nonmetal, material forming and control engineering (commonly known as welding specialty). As I graduated from inorganic nonmetal major, and most of my classmates and friends are majoring in materials, the employment prospects and salaries of various majors are roughly analyzed as follows:

(1) Polymer: The specialty of polymer is on the rise in recent years, especially in the fields of composite materials such as aerospace and automobiles. Can enter automobile enterprises, aerospace systems, composite materials research and development units. The starting salary is related to the unit education and personal ability, ranging from 3000- 10000.

(2) Metals: units with traditional majors and wide employment, aerospace, automobile enterprises, steel, building materials and military industry. The starting salary is related to the unit education and personal ability, ranging from 3000 to 8000.

(3) Inorganic nonmetals: traditional industries such as building cement, structural ceramics and functional ceramics, and emerging carbon-based and silicon-based composite materials are all good. Can enter the construction, battery, research institute and other units, the starting salary is related to the unit education and personal ability, ranging from 3000 to 8000.

(4) Material forming and control engineering: The employment situation is the best, which is mainly used for special welding of aircraft carriers, weapons and ships. It has the best employment and is easier to enter the weapon systems of automobile enterprises, military industries and weapons. The starting salary is related to the unit education and personal ability, ranging from 5000- 12000.
