Which hotel management school in Switzerland is better: Les Roches, EHL or SHMS?
EHL is actually not as good as imagined. In 2010, the employment rate of EHL was only 65%. You can go to their official website to find out more.
In addition, I recommend reading this article, which is available on many websites. All have been reprinted. This is the most pertinent review of a hotel management school I have ever seen:
I have lived in Switzerland for nearly four years and have met many Chinese students who, like me, went to Switzerland to study hotel management. I have also visited several hotel management schools, so I have a certain understanding of Swiss schools. Let me remind everyone that there is no official ranking of Swiss schools. Many of the rankings we see now are done by private individuals. It can be said that no individual is qualified to rank these schools. For those students who want to study hotel management in Switzerland, I suggest that they have a comprehensive understanding of the school. What I can provide here is just some of my knowledge. I hope you will choose the school carefully:
EHL -- -The oldest school
The oldest hotel management school, established in 1893. Teaching in French and English, the school is located in Lausanne, Geneva, a French-speaking part of Switzerland, half an hour's drive from Geneva Airport. The school has very strict academic requirements and high admission requirements. High school graduation plus college entrance examination scores (the college entrance examination scores must meet the domestic undergraduate admission line to be considered), IELTS must reach 7 points or above, and qualified applicants must finally Attend an interview with EHL. The tuition, room and board fees for a four-year bachelor's degree are about 160,000 Swiss francs, or almost one million yuan. For a four-year undergraduate degree, the internship time is 36 weeks. I also wanted to apply to this school back then, but unfortunately a score of 7 on IELTS was relatively high for most high schools. I got a score of 5.5, which is considered a relatively normal level. I don’t know any classmates studying EHL, so I don’t know much about the situation. The master's program is supposed to be thirteen months long, with no internship opportunities. In addition to being famous for its long history, EHL also has a very high elimination rate, which makes many hotel management students admire it. However, while admiring it, they are also daunted by this century-old hotel school.
SHMS ---- the largest and most beautiful school
SHMS is located in Montreux and has two campuses, namely Caux and Leysin campuses. I visited it in my first year in Switzerland Passing through the Caux campus of this school, the school building was formerly a large hotel, so the school building is very majestic and can be described as magnificent. The school is located on the top of the mountain, with a panoramic view of the entire Lake Geneva. The school is larger than other hotel management schools in Switzerland, with a larger number of students, and the ratio of students from each region is quite moderate. During my graduation trip to Europe, I happened to meet four SHMS students. At that time, two of them had already received offers from a hotel in the United States, and the other two planned to return to China for development. They themselves have a good evaluation of SHMS. The school's long-term relationship with the hotel is the most praised by students. It holds a Recruitment Fair for interns and graduates every year. It may be because there are a large number of graduates from SHMS and they go to SHMS for recruitment. There are also many hotels. I have seen their leaflet promoting recruitment. Indeed, many big hotels are recruiting with them. Large groups include Ritz, Hyatt, Four Season, Disney and SWISS. There are also many high-end hotels in Europe such as Solmelia, Evian Royal Sanctuary, Helios and many more. The tuition, room and board fees for the three-year bachelor's degree program are about 100,000 Swiss francs, and the school provides two internships, which last about 9-12 months. I personally like this school very much, but the agency did not recommend this school when I was applying, so I did not choose this school at that time. However, I heard that the academics at this school are relatively difficult, and the homework is also quite difficult, so you must be mentally prepared to endure hardship when choosing this school.
GLION -----My alma mater
I graduated from Glion and entered school in 2004. I can say a little more about my school. The school is also located in Montreux, halfway up the mountain, just a little below SHMS. On a cliff-like location, you can also see the entire Lake Geneva. The school has two campuses. The school is surrounded by ski areas, which gives it a resort feel. The school hardware is pretty good, the school has been in operation for many years, the promotion is well done, and the school is well-known.
When I applied, I asked many agents which school to choose in Switzerland, and they all recommended Glion to me. I thought that Glion originally had a good Swiss hotel management tradition. It was only after I arrived at school that I learned that Glion and LesRoches were acquired by an American company in 2000. The American business atmosphere destroyed the academic atmosphere of GLION. And when I went there, there were many Asians. In a school with hundreds of students, 125 were from schools in mainland China. In addition, there were also many students from South Korea, Vietnam, and India, and of course, there were also some Americans. When I was a freshman and sophomore, I often had group discussions with classmates from my own country. When the teacher wasn't paying attention, we all spoke Chinese. . . But the teachers are pretty good and have a good rapport with the students. However, the tuition is a bit expensive. The total tuition fee for a three-and-a-half-year bachelor's degree is almost 160,000 Swiss francs (more than one million yuan combined), and there are often some small fees to pay. Overall, I lived quite happily during those three and a half years. I often went skiing or traveling with my classmates.
Cesar Ritz----A school standing on the shoulders of great men
Cesar Ritz School of Hotel Management, founded in 1982, has two campuses, located southeast of Lake Geneva The border city Le Bouveret is located in the center of Brig. Caesar Ritz College is named after Mr. Caesar Ritz, the father of the hotel. It is authorized by the Caesar Ritz Foundation, so it can be regarded as a kind of recognition of Ritz by the descendants of the father of the hotel. Overall, this is a very good academy with great potential for development. I believe it will soon be as famous as the EHL. The undergraduate program at Ritz is three years long, and the master's program is two years long. In addition to teaching hotel and tourism management courses, courses in catering business management are also a feature of this school. There is also a very famous course in this school, which is the Culinary Art course. I heard that the teachers in this course are very strong, and Their school was the organizer of the Swiss House for several consecutive Olympic Games, which made me very envious back then! In addition, catering business management courses are also the strength of this school. Many people think that after studying hotel management, they can only work in the hotel or tourism industry. In fact, it mainly depends on how the school sets up the courses. Taking Ritz as an example, this school places great emphasis on hotels and tourism. Divergent education in the tourism direction, for example, the course will involve the management of chain catering companies. The three-year bachelor's degree at Ritz costs about 120,000 Swiss francs, and the master's degree costs about 60,000 Swiss francs.
LES-ROCHES------Glion's sister school
The school is located in Bruce, Valais, Switzerland, a place with beautiful scenery. However, most dormitories are separated from the school building. It takes more than ten minutes to walk from the dormitory to class. It's okay when it's not snowing, but when it snows, it's not convenient to move around. Like Glion, LesRoches also has a good reputation in the country, and its nearly thirty-year history has allowed the school to produce a large number of graduates. But now, like Glion, the school is owned by a consortium in the United States. When I applied, my friends and I happened to go to Glion and Les Roches respectively. Les Roches’ undergraduate degree is completed in four years, which is half a year longer than my undergraduate degree, but it is very satisfying. What makes my friend depressed is that in their first and second years, they took classes in the first half of the year and did internships in the second half of the year. However, the first half of the year consisted of three weeks of classes and three weeks of doing practical work in the school cafeteria (without pay). , which means that he spends half of his time doing practical work, which means that in his first and second years, he only spends a quarter of his time actually attending classes, and the practical courses are in restaurant F&B in the first year, and in the kitchen in the second year. In terms of... Later, my friend transferred to another school in the second semester of his second year. He had spent less than half a year of classes in the first two years and had already spent 60,000 Swiss francs. I heard that Rino's group recently spent a lot of money to find someone to do a school ranking. The survey results actually said that Rino's ranking was higher than Cornell's ranking, and it was in the same first tier as EHL. In fact, Rinois is really not that good. Although it is from the same group as Glion, it is a low-end product. I studied at Glion for three and a half years, but when I got to Renoise, it was changed to four due to the quality of students. Read for years.
IHTTI----a small but well-known school
Founded in 1984, the college is located in the city of Neuchatel in the French-speaking area. Neuchatel is a very nice city with many ancient buildings preserved. IHTTI is a smaller school with only about 300 people, but the school's equipment is still good. After visiting so many schools, I feel that this school's dormitory is the best. According to a friend, IHTTI was formerly known as a hotel. Although the school is relatively small, it has all the equipment and facilities needed to study hotel management. In addition, the quality of teachers in this school seems to be good, because I often hear people say that the teachers in this school are very powerful, and some five-star hotel executives come here as part-time teachers. The course is more famous for its hotel and tourism direction, which is suitable for future work in luxury tourism and vacation product management. The cost of a three-year undergraduate course at this school is about 100,000 Swiss francs. This school provides free English tutoring courses for students. I personally appreciate this aspect of this school because everyone knows that schools in Switzerland are private, but it is rare that this school is so considerate of students.
HIM-----Retraining Base for Hotel Managers
The school was founded in 1986 and is located in the center of Montreux. It is also a small school, but it can be seen from the main building of the school. It looks quite atmospheric, and you can see the distant mountain peaks from the school, which is a nice place to watch. I am also studying in Montreux, so I visited this school when I first arrived in Switzerland. HIM left a good impression on me. When I visit a school, I usually like to visit the library. HIM is a school with about 400 to 500 people. The library actually has over a thousand books. In addition, HIM students seem to be more mature. I heard that this is because HIM mainly promotes double major degrees in business administration and hotel management, and is more popular with some high-level hotel managers who want to retrain. In addition, this low-key school has a very good point, that is, it cooperates with Cornell in the United States, and there are also some more famous schools in the United States. I have always believed that hotel management is a relatively specialized subject. If some business management courses are injected into the course, it can be It is said to be a good improvement, so that students are not necessarily limited to the hotel industry after graduation but can have broader employment opportunities. The tuition fee for a three-year undergraduate course is about 100,000 Swiss francs, which is about 600,000 RMB.
IMI-----a smaller school in Lucerne
IMI is located in the center of Sulsen, Switzerland. There is a large lake next to the school. Standing on the lake You can see the snow-capped mountains in the distance, which is a very nice scenery. I once had a classmate who studied here. My classmate commented that the school is small and the tuition is more expensive than DCT in the same city, but the teaching quality is far inferior to DCT. Since the school is not well-known, it is quite difficult to find internships. Therefore, my classmates did not rely on the school to find internships, but found jobs in restaurants in German-speaking areas on their own. IMI's undergraduate program is a three-year program with tuition fees of approximately 110,000 Swiss francs.
SSTH --- A school with two language departments
SSTH is located in the German-speaking area. It was founded in 1966 and was formerly a spa hotel. The school itself is divided into German teaching area and English teaching area. When I was traveling, I met a girl who was studying at SSTH. According to her, SSTH is divided into two departments, one is German and the other is English. The German department is almost all Swiss locals, and the English department is divided into two classes. About half of every class is Asian, and there are also quite a few Sri Lankans. Because SSTH has a branch in Sri Lanka, students there will transfer here in their third year, but the students in the class get along very well. It was very harmonious and there was basically no racial discrimination happening. However, one thing needs to be mentioned. Domestic intermediaries always bring SSTH and HTW Chur together. In fact, HTW Chur has terminated its cooperation with SSTH since 2006. Domestic intermediaries distort the information for personal interests. In fact, I insist that SSTH is part of a public university. I hope students will not be misled.
After completing the three-year diploma course at SSTH, if students want to continue to complete the degree course, students can study at Queen Margaret University in the United Kingdom to complete the degree in one year (completed in Switzerland), or go to the University of Delaware in the United States, which also takes one year. To complete the degree, students can also transfer to HTW Chur to complete the degree in two years (in principle, all hotel management school students can transfer to HTW Chur as long as they meet the conditions. This does not mean that SSTH is part of HTW Chur).
HTMi----another very small school
It is located in the German-speaking area of ??Sulsen. The situation of this school was told to me by a HTMi student I met on the Korakuen Forum. He said that the school is relatively small. The teaching building is made up of several small wooden houses, and the number of people is only about 200 (some of them are out for internships. , the school actually only has about a hundred people), it is a relatively remote school with many Vietnamese and Indian students. Although the school provides meals, most students report that the food is of poor quality and often complain to the school, but the school does not care. Moreover, the personnel transfer of teachers is relatively fierce, and teachers are replaced more frequently. The school's library and swimming pool are both pitifully small. The library only has three or four bookshelves, and the swimming pool is not much bigger than a bathtub. The only advantage is that the tuition is relatively cheap. The tuition fee for a three-year undergraduate degree is less than 90,000 Swiss francs. However, I saw some students on Swissant reporting that this school does not issue transcripts in order to prevent students from changing schools midway. Students who want to transfer must provide transcripts to prove which courses they have taken, and other Swiss schools will accept the transfer. The school applied for it.
BHMS---a school facing enrollment problems
It is located near the Lucerne train station. It is not well-known, and the number of students is very small. I heard that there are only more than a hundred people. I had hardly heard of this school during my time in Switzerland. I also met a student from this school on Swissant, but this student was full of bitterness. I feel like I was cheated by the school, and I don’t know the specific reason. I just heard that the school itself is not qualified to issue diplomas. Most of the students in the school are Asians, so it is difficult to find internships.
The schools mentioned above are all hotel management schools that can provide English teaching. There may be more schools that teach in English that are not mentioned. If you know more, please continue to add. Also, I don’t know much about schools teaching in other languages, nor do I know the students there, so I won’t comment on them yet.
