Michael Swanwick's Creative Career

Since 1980s, Michael Swanwick began to publish fantasy novels. His first work, The Feast of St. Janice, was published in the magazine New Dimension edited by robert Silverberg and Mata Randall (No.1980,No. 1 1). Soon, Vanvik became more and more famous. He has the passion and skills of a writer, and his works are a mixture of his usual multi-level sci-fi scenes and the nutrients drawn from myths. It seems that he is imitating the short stories of the famous science fiction writer Gene Wolfe, but it is not so complicated. In 1980s, Michael Swanwick was not prolific, and he was still in the stage of honing his writing skills with short stories. However, his works during this period covered a wide range of contents, such as a slightly sentimental fable of redemption, hard science fiction stories on the asteroid belt, and typical "Cyberpunk" novels ... Gradually, he formed his own mature style, which was warm, affectionate, cruel, tragic, profound, introverted and even moral redemption and domestication. Michael Swanwick's novel creation can be described as one step at a time, with gradual development. His first novel, On the Drift (1985), has a very high starting point. It constructs an alternate story of history or historical rewriting and tells a fictional story about the division of the United States. From then on, vacuum flower (1987) and Griffin's egg (199 1) are full of interesting and profound implications.

His fourth novel, Station of the Tide (199 1), was well-made, and won the nebula award in one fell swoop, and was nominated for Hugo Award and Arthur C clark Award. The story in the novel takes place on a planet called Miranda. Human immigrants living in lowlands are anxiously waiting for the once-in-50-year tide and worrying about their own fate. And all cities must move to the highlands before the high tide. In this chaotic and complicated background, a government spy pursued the fugitive Gregory because he stole advanced technology through the interstellar network. In the process of hunting, he experienced all kinds of knowledge, the meaning of life on the planet, the meaning of his own existence, and all kinds of things that he had never thought of or encountered before. This novel has a compact and touching plot and is well worth reading. Vanvik presents us with an incredibly complex world in a very narrow space, which is full of slightly distorted characters, gorgeous and luxurious prosperity, rich and profound metaphors and fascinating technical cores, including magical artificial intelligence and virtual reality.

Since then, the Iron Dragon Goddess (1993), Jack Faust (1997) and Bone of the Earth (2002) have not won any awards, but they are also excellent. In particular, in February 2002, The Earth Skeleton with the theme of time travel was published, which was well received and nominated for the nebula award in 2002 and Hugo award in 2003.

Compared with his novels, Michael Swanwick's short stories have deeper foundation and faster creation speed. For example, he once wrote more than 100 "Periodic Table of Science Fiction Elements" series novels a week (the author's translation speed could not keep up with his creation speed), which was a high yield. For more than ten years, Vanvik's short stories have won numerous awards. Especially in recent years, Hugo Award or Xingyun Award has been recorded every year. The Edge of the World won the Theodore sturgeon Memorial Award of 1989, and its work was nominated for Hugo Award and World Fantasy Award.
