What are the east, middle and west lines of South-to-North Water Transfer Project?

The South-to-North Water Transfer Project is a large-scale project in China. After decades of planning and construction, the relatively abundant water resources in the south have been adjusted to the water-deficient areas in the north through measures such as water transfer, water delivery and water replenishment. The South-to-North Water Diversion Project is mainly divided into three water conveyance lines: East Line, Middle Line and West Line.

East Line: Water is transferred from the Jianghuai area in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River to Beijing, Tianjin and other areas through the waterways of the Yangtze River, Huaihe River and Bohai Sea.

Middle Line: Water is transferred from the Three Gorges Reservoir area in the middle and upper reaches of the Yangtze River and transported to Hebei, Shanxi, Inner Mongolia and other regions through the waterways of the Yangtze River and Bohai Sea.

West Line: Water is diverted from Yalong River in the upper reaches of the Yangtze River and transported to Gansu, Shaanxi, Ningxia, Qinghai, Xinjiang and other regions through pipelines.

To sum up, the East Route of the South-to-North Water Transfer Project draws water from the Jianghuai area in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River and transports it to Beijing, Tianjin and other areas. The middle line draws water from the Three Gorges reservoir area in the middle and upper reaches of the Yangtze River and transports it to Hebei, Shanxi and Inner Mongolia. The west line draws water from the Yalong River in the upper reaches of the Yangtze River to Gansu, Shaanxi, Ningxia, Qinghai and Xinjiang.
