Studying in Russia

1. Visa on arrival

Current Russian law stipulates that after foreign citizens enter Russia, they must obtain a local foreign visa within 72 hours. The registration office handles the residence visa registration procedures. Therefore, those who want to study in Russia should report to the study abroad institution as soon as possible after arriving in Russia, so that the foreign affairs department of the study abroad institution can handle the residence visa registration procedures for you within the specified time.

"Visa on arrival" can be understood as a temporary residence permit in the country. According to the regulations of the Immigration Bureau, foreigners must apply for a visa on arrival within 3 working days after arriving in Russia (including the day of arrival). The validity period of the visa on arrival is the same as The validity period of the passport visa page exactly matches, that is: if the visa page is valid until November 15th, then the validity period of the visa on arrival is until November 15th. Usually we refer to the first visa on arrival that students apply for as temporary visa on arrival, because its expiry date is relatively short, generally no more than 80 days.

Process for applying for temporary visa on arrival:

1) Check in at the school’s external office

2) Sign a study contract with the school

3) Pay tuition according to the contract

4) Submit the visa on arrival application and pay the visa on arrival fee

5) The school issues a certificate (you need to go to the foreign office on time to get the visa on arrival according to the time marked above)

Normally, the processing period for temporary visa on arrival is about one week, and if there are a large number of people, it may take 2-3 weeks. When picking up the visa on arrival, the school will also inform students about the time to apply for a one-year multiple-entry visa and the extension of the visa on arrival.

2. Multiple-entry visa and visa on arrival extension

According to the visa extension procedures issued by the Russian Immigration Service, foreign students must apply for extension procedures after arriving in Russia. The application process must be done at least 30 days in advance before the deadline (30 days in advance for St. Petersburg and 20 days in advance for the Moscow region. The school will notify you of the specific date when you receive the temporary visa on arrival).
