The full English name of OET is Occupational English Test, which is a professional English test sponsored by the Australian Bureau of Adult Education (CAE), and is specially aimed at overseas medical professionals. The purpose of OET occupational English test is to evaluate the English level of medical and health professionals who want to study abroad, immigrate to Australia or work in Australia. It mainly examines the skills of reading, listening, writing and speaking.

OET is the highest authoritative test to evaluate the English level of medical staff, and it is recognized by the Australian Medical Council (AMC), the Australian Nurses Association and other 13 authorities. For China doctors and nurses who want to register, work and immigrate in Australia, taking the OET exam is the first and necessary step to go to Australia.

The Australian Medical Council (AMC) has approved the Occupational English Test (OET) as one of the two professional English proficiency tests (the other is IELTS) for overseas general practitioners or specialists to assess their language ability when applying for conditional registration or unconditional registration to practice in Australia. However, the Australian Dental Council (ADC) only recognizes OET as the only professional English proficiency test for overseas dentists.

The Australian Nurses Association (ANC) has approved the Occupational English Test (OET) as one of the two professional English proficiency tests (the other is IELTS) for overseas nurses to assess their language ability when applying for registration to practice in Australia.
