Warrensville Western Cemetery

At the end of 1950s, the Shakespeare Historical Society undertook an arduous task, and created a commemorative marker to tell the story of a small unmarked cemetery, which is usually called "Land Cemetery" or "Laomahn Island Cemetery". Located at No.3451,this cemetery is the second oldest cemetery in Guyahoga County and the oldest landmark in Shaq Heights. However, the records of the cemetery have long been lost, and only a few grave robberies have occurred in the past half century. A shocking historical society needs to explain a spatial story by studying epitaphs, newspaper articles, county records, maps and accounts provided by the descendants of the buried people. The narrative of restoring history is to tell Shakespeare's highly shared heritage and celebrate the pioneers in this area.

Commemorative markers are used to carve new meanings on public cemeteries. The Shaq Historical Society intends to transform this unmarked abandoned cemetery into a sacred place where residents of Shaq Heights can pay tribute to the founders of the area. Concise and inclusive, the directors of the historical society decided on the perfect gift they wanted:

On Memorial Day, 1959, the plaque captures the stories of patriotic veterans, brave pioneers, hardworking immigrants and devout drinkers. Its position in the weathered tombstone provides a starting point for discovering and commemorating the colorful and unique history of Warrensville Town and Shaq Heights.
