At the beginning of the Western Han Dynasty, it belonged to Liaodong County, the secretariat department of Youzhou.

The Eastern Han Dynasty belonged to Koguryo.

The Three Kingdoms was originally Koguryo. In 242 AD (the third year), Wei Youzhou, the state secretariat, asked Qiu Jiansuo for Koguryo, and the local area was returned to Xuantu County.

Jin is from Koguryo. In 343 AD (the first year of Jianyuan), it belonged to Yan (). 1995 12.30 the State Council approved the revocation of Sanchazi District in baishan city and the establishment of Jiangyuan County. On June 5, 2006, the State Council (Guo Han [2006] No.44) approved: it agreed to cancel Jiangyuan County in Jilin Province and resume the establishment of Jiangyuan District in baishan city. The original administrative area of Jiangyuan County was Jiangyuan District.

With the approval of the State Council, Badaojiang District of baishan city was renamed Hunjiang District.

The total area of the city is 17485 square kilometers, and the total population is 1.308 million (2009). The total population of the two urban areas is 600,000, and the urbanization rate is 68%, which is much higher than the urbanization level of the whole province.
