However, the controversy continues. 2. Soviet period (1953-1988)

After the Soviet Union occupied Lithuania, it adopted a new national flag based on the Soviet flag, completely erasing the national characteristics. There are green and white stripes under the Soviet flag.

The first edition of the national flag (1988—2004)

1988, Lithuania's independence movement became stronger, so Lithuanian rulers redefined the tricolor flag as the national flag, and formally standardized the color of the national flag one year later. After independence from the Soviet Union, the tricolor flag was confirmed by referendum in 1992 and written into the new Lithuanian Constitution 199 1. The Lithuanian National Flag Law passed on June 26th stipulates the design, size and usage rules of the national flag. The ratio determined at that time was 2: 1.

The second edition of the national flag (2004-present)

On July 8, 2004, the aspect ratio of the national flag was changed from 2: 1 to 5:3, and the Vitis flag was accepted as the flag representing the Lithuanian government. The new revision was approved by President Valdas Adamkus and came into effect on September 6, 2004.
