Yu's surname is Ji first. In the early years of the Western Zhou Dynasty, Zhi Shu, the son of Ji surname, was made a vassal state, and later his descendants took Yu as their surname. During the Spring and Autumn Period and the Warring States Period, the descendants of Zhi Shu moved to Tancheng, Shandong Province. During the Wei, Jin, Southern and Northern Dynasties, Yu really went to the whole country.

The earliest spread and migration of the Yu family was in the northern part of Qinyang, Jiaozuo, which is the seat of the ancient kingdom and the birthplace of the Yu family. After the demise of Zhi State, the Yu people mainly lived in present-day Henan, and also mainly lived in Henan, such as Fangcheng, Wu Tang, Xuchang, Funiu Mountain and other places.

During the Qin and Han dynasties, people named Yu began to spread slowly in Henan, from Shanxi and Hebei to the north, from Anhui and Shandong to the east, and from Shaanxi and Gansu to the west. Many people surnamed Yu followed the fleeing army to move south to a vast area in the southeast. During the period of "Five Wild Flowers", the communication and integration between various ethnic groups were promoted, and the Central Plains became a battleground for military strategists. In order to escape the war in southern Henan, Yu recently went south to Hubei, and then moved to Sichuan and Hunan.

During the Sui and Tang Dynasties, due to the reunification of the country, the reduction of wars and the deep-rooted homesickness of the Chinese people, the Yu family migrated to nothing, but flourished, and the Yu family formed several large families in the north.

At the end of the Northern Song Dynasty, Jin Bing captured the border beam in Tokyo and took it back to Qin. Some people surnamed Yu went to Heilongjiang. In the late Southern Song Dynasty, Yu began to enter Fujian from Zhejiang and Guangdong from Fujian.

At the end of the Yuan Dynasty, the peasant uprising army rose everywhere, the society was in turmoil, and the population of many provinces dropped sharply. Shanxi was in an advantageous position, not affected much, and the population was prosperous.

After the establishment of the Ming Dynasty, the imperial court implemented the policy of population migration. The Yu family in Shanxi was also one of the surnames of people who moved in the Ming Dynasty, and the people moved to Shandong, Henan, Hebei, Shaanxi, Jiangsu and other places respectively.

In the Qing Dynasty, there were many surnames in Henan, Hebei, especially Shandong, who made a living and settled in Kanto.
