On June 27, 2004, this problem was finally recognized by the provincial authorities for the first time: it was located in the south of Yaojibo Mountain in Xunwu County. The provincial scientific research team believes that the source is the starting point of a river and the place with the shape of surface water flow at first, that is, the farthest point and the highest point from the source. Xunwu water, one of the second sources of Dongjiang, is the positive source of Dongjiang, because its annual average runoff, precipitation, basin area and river length are greater than Dingnan water, another source. Since the source of Xunwu Water is Yaojibo Mountain in Santong Village, Sanbiao Township, Xunwu County, the expedition team determined that the source of Dongjiang River is Yaojibo Mountain and the source river is Santong River.

Dongjiang, which originated in southern Ganzhou, is one of the four major water systems in the Pearl River. It is an important drinking water source and key water quality protection area in Guangdong and Hong Kong. Not only responsible for water supply in Hong Kong, Shenzhen, Huizhou, Dongguan, Heyuan and other places, but also responsible for downstream irrigation and water delivery. The rapid development of the Pearl River Delta and the need to maintain Hong Kong's prosperity and stability make the planning, development, utilization, protection and management of water resources in the source area of the East River increasingly important. Therefore, it is of great significance to scientifically and accurately investigate and demonstrate the source river, source and birthplace of Dongjiang, and deeply understand the water resources, forest resources, geological resources, tourism resources and ecological environment in the source area of Dongjiang.

But where Dongjiang River is, it has been inconclusive since ancient times. Above Heheba in Longchuan County, Guangdong Province, Dongjiang has two sources: the east source is Xunwu water, and Xunwu County acknowledges that the source is in the south of Yaojibo Mountain in its territory; The west source is Dingnan Water (also known as Jiuqu River), and Anyuan County recognizes its source as Sanbai Mountain in China. It was said before that the source of Dongjiang River is Sanbai Mountain in Anyuan County.

In order to analyze and judge scientifically and accurately, in June, 2002, experts from hydrology, surveying and mapping, forestry, geology and mineral resources, personnel and other departments in the province became a scientific investigation team of the source of Dongjiang River, and in the same month, they declared the "Jiangxi Soft Science Research Plan Project" to the Provincial Science and Technology Department. The provincial science and technology department attached great importance to this and quickly approved it. At the end of the same year, with the strong support of relevant departments in Ganzhou, scientific research was officially launched. This is the first time that China has conducted a multidisciplinary and multi-faceted comprehensive scientific investigation on the source of Dongjiang River.

After more than a year's efforts, the scientific research team adopted the methods of tracing the source, interviewing the masses, field investigation, data analysis and scientific demonstration, and in March 2004, reached the conclusion that the source river of Dongjiang River is Xunwushui Santong River, and its source is located in the south of Yaojibo Mountain, and its birthplace is Yaojibo Mountain, and put forward some suggestions and countermeasures to protect the ecological environment of the source of Dongjiang River.

On June 27th, 2004, the Provincial Science and Technology Department organized experts and scholars in the province to evaluate this achievement. After careful discussion and evaluation, the participating experts agreed that the conclusion reached by the research team was "reliable data and correct conclusion". So far, the source of Dongjiang River has been recognized by the provincial authorities for the first time.

Cheng Zongjin, head of the Dongjiang source scientific investigation team, told reporters that exploring the Dongjiang source is entirely for scientific purposes. Anyuan 300 Mountain and Xunwubobo Mountain both belong to the source area of Dongjiang River, and the ecological environment protection should be further strengthened.

Xunwu County, Jiangxi Province is currently applying for the establishment of Boshan Nature Reserve in Yao Ji to strengthen the protection of the source of Dongjiang River.
