Observation report on five life States of the third person
There are four "milestones" in the doctoral stage abroad, namely, freshmen's entrance (freshman), doctoral candidate qualification confirmation (confirmation), progress review (progress review) and next stop confusion (final review and paper submission). Confirm, that is, report your innovation and research plan in cutting-edge research to teachers and classmates. This report determines whether the bosses think you are qualified to continue to deepen the topic. This is the doctor's "first hurdle". Generally speaking, only if you pass the confirmation, you are not a candidate, but you can be called a real doctoral student. The progress review is relatively simple, showing that the whole project is going as planned. Review at the end of the term This is a metaphysical question. If the boss decides that your research is deep and wide enough, and you can pass the final review, you can write your thesis and the horn of graduation will blow. Submitting a paper means going abroad: congratulations, you can graduate!
First, freshmen (freshmen)
I'm afraid no one is more suitable than me for the example of a newcomer reporting. I have experienced all kinds of "plots" of dog blood, such as being cheated of rent by crossing the ocean, being stolen by a friend's children (temporarily staying at a friend's house when I first arrived in Australia), for example, when short rent was at a senior's house, the corridor was too dark at night, and he fell directly from the second floor to the first floor, and the bruises on his body slowly dissipated after two or three weeks, such as the embarrassment of being difficult to integrate into the research team, and so on. How did you feel then? I really don't feel anything, just thinking about how to solve the problem as soon as possible and then let myself catch my breath. How are you feeling? I feel too careless and credulous. Even after going through all kinds of admission procedures, I still ask myself from time to time: what do you want from studying for a doctorate? I am still thinking about this problem, so I will make the following observations.
Second, the doctoral qualification confirmation (confirmation)
After all kinds of stimulation in the past week, the students of LHC finally passed her confirmation. Other people's confirmation questions are all a formality, but she met two serious judges and was questioned by various questions, almost crying on the spot. Afterwards, she analyzed this matter with me and summed up some lessons of "blood and tears". I hope to learn her class well next year.
1. Understanding and speaking are the basis of all expressions. It is very important and necessary to exercise English listening and speaking at any time. Imagine that professors are all foreigners (Australians? British? Indians? ), they won't deliberately slow down your speech because your mother tongue is not English. Once you don't understand what the tutor is asking, this is a sign of "car accident". Understanding is only the first step. The second step is to go back to the question and know how to express it.
Be confident at all times and don't panic. Self-confidence is not forcing yourself to pretend, but really believing in yourself. Work hard for such a long time, read literature, summarize information, put forward innovations, and discover and grasp innovations. No one can compare with you in these contents, so be confident, even if what you believe is true at that moment is finally overthrown. What does it matter if you are overthrown? Isn't the development of technology and research a process of constantly knocking down new buildings?
Treat change with an open mind, because the only certainty in this world is change. The venue of the meeting will suddenly change, and the designated judges may forget their appointment with you and be absent. The judges may be completely amateurs, but they are trying their best to report to you. These things can happen, and it is difficult for us to make full preparations. What we can do is to grasp the core (topic) and improvise.
To tell the truth, after listening to LHC's self-summary, I was most impressed by the first point. God, LHC came to Australia to study undergraduate. She has been in Australia for more than three years and still finds it difficult to understand and express clearly. What should I do? Learning English well is really not a slogan. We need to constantly improve ourselves with actions.
Third, being a doctor (review of progress)
An accidental plan met with hope, and everyone went to the supermarket to shop for jiaozi. She is a doctor for the second year. Her tutor is a foreigner, so the overall style is foreign, such as going to work normally from Monday to Friday and relaxing on Saturday and Sunday. She shares a house with four roommates, and two small blankets on the floor of the room are put together as carpets. At first sight, she knew they were making do. She knew that I had noticed these details, so she specifically explained to me, "When I graduate, if I stay here as a blogger, I will rent a house and live a good life, so I won't be so satisfied." As soon as I heard it, I really wanted to refute her. "Every day is worth living. Why wait for the future? " She takes a trolley once a week (similar to the trolley for mainlanders to go shopping in Hong Kong) and walks for 40 minutes to a living point nearest to the school for a week's food shopping. It's like this every week, and now it's the second year. When I ask her about her future plans, she will also have various marriage and love considerations (currently single) and various career considerations (if she is studying for a PhD, she would prefer to stay abroad).
See? Although the full scholarship doctor looks at all kinds of scenery, he is actually an extremely grounded ascetic scientific research practitioner. Dull, boring? No, because scientific research just sounds tall, and it is essentially a job with a strong schedule. In all kinds of rumors, it is said that scientific research has to endure all kinds of hardships day and night. In fact, scientific research is no different from ordinary workplace. When you take a job seriously, overtime is inevitable. It is normal to work overtime when you produce results as soon as possible (such as publishing articles). So, please remove scientific research from the altar.
Fourth, the next stop of confusion (final review and paper submission)
ZQ and I are small partners of the same research group, and we don't communicate much at ordinary times. After all, the progress of doing different topics is very different, but she has handed in her thesis and graduated. Once I learned about this in the rest area, I asked her, "What are you going to do after graduation?" "I may follow my boss (and my mentor) for a while." I'm choking. I can feel that she doesn't really love scientific research. After getting her doctorate, it is the easiest way to stay as a doctor. That's all. What makes me feel even more incongruous is that her family helped her buy a house here (you know, she has no Australian resident status, and she has to pay heavy taxes and pay in one lump sum). She plays Xiaomi security camera and grows vegetables at home every day. Then, her boyfriend is in China, and he was introduced by his parents. So, I don't know what she wants. Settle in Australia? But my boyfriend is in China, and so are my parents and relatives. Returning to China? Nothing in her behavior reflects that she wants to return to China. Maybe I'm too objective, so I don't understand it. But it is also possible that one's mentality is too old, and young people just have the capital to try and make mistakes. ZQ is actually very young. She graduated from undergraduate course and studied PhD directly, so I am seven or eight years older than her.
LJY, ZQ's classmate, is a different example. On the contrary, I understand her path choice. When she was an undergraduate, she married a China native who was studying for a PhD. When she started her PhD, she was pregnant and gave birth. Then the whole family got pr status in Australia, bought a house and settled here. Now I have just entered the stage of writing my thesis, and I am not busy every day. She came to the office at ten in the morning and left at five or six in the afternoon. After graduation, my husband worked as a doctoral student in another university in Melbourne. I asked her about her future plans. She just wants to be a doctoral student and end up in the same university as her husband, so that she can work together. Their children are now in China, and the elderly help to take care of them. I will probably take it back to kindergarten next year. I think this is probably the portrayal of the first generation and the second generation of knowledge immigrants in China.
Occasionally, I met another girl, XJ, whose doctoral progress was faster than that of ZQ and LJY. She waits for the external review of her doctoral thesis to be finished, and then she can pack up and leave school. She is single (of course, she really wants to find someone, but this thing still depends on fate), and she just wants to return to China. Actually, I was confused at first. According to her conditions, she is fully qualified to apply for pr and has strong scientific research strength. Isn't the atmosphere abroad much better than at home after she studied PhD? After much communication, I still quite understand her answer and really support it.
"Blogging abroad is also about spelling articles and relationships, a radish and a pit. I know a friend who worked as a teaching assistant in Australia for many years and was recently promoted to a lecturer. Do you know that?/You know what? Do you know that?/You know what? The salary as a teaching assistant is very low. If a person can still have a home, it is estimated that he can't afford it. "
"I have been here for four years. Everything here is comfortable and the pace of life is slow, but sometimes I think, this is it today, and this is it for life. This prospect of life drives me crazy, and this life is also boring. Although the domestic competition is fierce, the environment is not good, food is unsafe, house prices are high and so on. But I think life in China has a momentum, so I want to go back. I never thought about working abroad when I was looking for a job. Now even if Cambridge invites me to be a blogger, I don't want to go. "
5. Quit halfway.
Finally, talk about old YL. I really admire her courage. She came to Australia to study undergraduate 2+2 program. After graduating from undergraduate course, she went back to China to study as a graduate student, and later came to Australia to study for a doctorate. Throughout the process, she got married and had children (two babies). Finally, after her husband graduated from Ph.D., he found that there were better employment opportunities in China and went back to work. What about her? She dropped out of school in the third year of her PhD and stayed in Australia to raise her children. Then re-participate in the training of local kindergarten teachers in Australia and be a part-time kindergarten teacher. I met her once and I really admire her. She is really the right person. I asked her frankly: Now that the child is so young and your husband is in China, it will take at least a few years for the husband and wife to live separately. what do you think? Her answer is also particularly cool: "The road is our own choice. When discussing with my husband, I also clearly know that the so-called doctor and professor titles just sound good, but they are essentially ordinary jobs, so when my husband has the opportunity to go to the enterprise, I also support him. I stay here mainly for the education of my children. I find that education in China will make children feel inferior. I am a product of China's education, an inferior person, but I don't want my children to become like me. " She chose a difficult road, but this road is her heartfelt choice, so she has no regrets. I feel a strong aura in her. And I really hope everything goes well with her.
Female doctors are the third kind of people besides men and women. They are different from male doctors and have more restrictive factors. Because in marriage, childbirth, family and career, these things need to be concentrated in a relatively short period of time. Why? Even with the development of medical technology, it will be more risky and difficult for women to have children after the age of 40. This is a physiological objective fact. When it comes to fertility (people who choose Dink will not discuss it for the time being), it will inevitably involve marriage, family and career. The example I mentioned above is very common, but very vivid; Maybe there is no ideal beauty, but there must be a sense of bone in reality. Write it here and encourage yourself.
