Dr. Kay Scarpetta was born in Miami, Florida. She is of Italian descent, and her family immigrated to the United States from Verona, Italy, a generation earlier. Blonde and blue-eyed, she began to devote herself to medicine after watching her father slowly die from leukemia when she was young. After graduation, her working life has been dealing with death. She is a perfectionist, an incredible hard worker, completely immersed in her work.

She likes to cook, especially Italian food, and she has a beautiful kitchen. She was married once, to Tony Benedetti, and the story of their divorce appears in the first novel in the series, Postmortem. It has also been mentioned in subsequent books. She had an unusual relationship with Mark James, who died in the London Underground bombing. The two were lovers since they were students, and she has been unable to get rid of her love for Mark since then. Later came Benton Wesley, whose relationship first began in "The Body Farm." In Point of Origin, Benton is murdered by Lucy's first love and his accomplices.

Scarpetta owns a house she designed herself, with a garage connected directly to the laundry room. Scarpetta usually drives a Mercedes, but she once switched cars after a subordinate was shot and killed in her own Mercedes.

In the early novels, Scarpetta was Virginia's chief medical examiner. After she resigned, she became a private forensic consultant. He later became a fellow of the National Academy of Forensic Sciences in Hollywood, Florida.
