William· William Louis Petersen (February 21, 1953 -) is an American actor born in Evanston, Illinois.

Although William is a fourth-generation member of a Danish immigrant family, his education was completed at Bishop Kelly High School, a Catholic high school in Boise, Idaho. He subsequently attended Idaho State University and received a scholarship to major in football. He then moved to Chicago and became a member of the Siberian Wolf Theater Company.

His film career began with "The Thief" in 1981. In 1986, he starred as Will Graham in "Manhunter", which also heralded the success of his acting career. .

Peterson's starring role in Oliver Stone's "Platoon" also alienated him from his family.

In "The Fighter," released in 2000, Peterson starred as District Governor Jack Hathway.
