Biotechnology uses plants, animals and microorganisms to make products or accomplish specific tasks for human beings. Biotechnology is widely used. Traditional applications include food manufacturing such as milk and wine, biological control such as pesticides, pharmacy such as antibiotics and vaccines, and garbage disposal. There are two main branches of modern biotechnology. One is reproductive technology, which mainly discovers methods that affect the reproduction of human beings and other organisms, and is mainly used in human medicine manufacturing and agriculture, such as contraceptive technology. The other branch is gene technology, which refers to improving crop yield by controlling the genetic structure of plants, animals and microorganisms, using animals needed by human beings, improving human health and longevity, or changing our surrounding environment.

Teaching-oriented biotechnology majors in Australia are mainly concentrated in undergraduate courses, while master's courses are divided into more detailed and research-oriented courses. For example, Australia is famous for its biological research, and the University of Adelaide, which has won several Nobel prizes in biology, has no teaching-oriented master's degree.
