Are American big cities safer than rural areas?
Research shows that the risk of death in rural small towns is 20% higher than that in big cities, ranging from shooting, car accidents, falls and drowning to other accidents.
Meyers said that cars, guns and drugs are the three major causes of injury and death in the United States.
She said that the risk of murder is the main factor for most people to judge whether big cities are safe or not. Although the homicide rate in big cities is indeed high, the risk of accidental injury death in rural areas is 40% higher than that in cities.
The total number of homicide deaths is far lower than accidental injuries. According to the federal database established by using the information of national death certificates, the researchers analyzed nearly 1.999 to 2006. The researchers ruled out deaths caused by terrorism.
After three years of research, they found that the mortality rate in rural counties is 22% higher than that in urban counties. The most common cause of injury and death is car accident. There are 27.6 1 car accident deaths per 65,438+10,000 people in rural areas, and 10.58 deaths per 65,438+10,000 people in urban areas.
There is no difference in the risk of gun death between rural and urban areas. But for children and people over the age of 45, the gun mortality rate in rural areas is higher than that in cities. For people aged 22-44, the gun mortality rate in cities is very high.
The research report was published on the website of Annals of Emergency Medicine on Tuesday. The results show that there are problems in the allocation of emergency personnel in rural areas.
Although the research results are contrary to the traditional view, emergency medical personnel are not surprised by the problem of injury death. O Ward Mello, a spokesman for the American College of Emergency Doctors, said that the key is how long it takes trained doctors to reach the trauma center and operating room. However, many rural areas do not have emergency medical facilities like those in big cities.
