Why did Moldova and Romania merge many times, but now they can't merge?

Moldova is a landlocked country in southeastern Europe, and its whole territory is almost completely surrounded by Ukraine and Romania. Speaking of it, Moldova and Romania are in the same strain. In history, the two countries have been unified many times and have very close relations. After the disintegration of the Soviet Union, the call for reunification between the two countries was also quite high. But strangely, Russia, which is not adjacent to the two countries, expressed strong opposition to this matter.

So, why does Russia oppose the merger of Romania and Moldova?

Moldovans and Romanians are descendants of Dacia. As early as 70 BC, the kingdom of Dacia was established. After 106 was annexed by the Roman Empire, Dacia became a province of the Roman Empire. The Romanian nation is a mixture of Dacia and Rome.

However, in the Moldova 1994 referendum, people who supported Moldova's independence occupied the overwhelming majority, and only a few people advocated the reunification with Romania.

The reason why this happens is actually related to the Soviet Union and later Russia.

After World War II, the Soviet Union moved a large number of local residents to Siberia in order to punish Moldovans for attacking the Soviet Union with Romania. Moreover, Moldova is very suitable for living because of its pleasant climate. So the Soviet Union built many nursing homes in Moldova. In this changing situation, there are fewer and fewer indigenous people in Moldova and more and more Soviet people. After decades of rule, Russians account for the majority of Moldova's main residents. So when 1994 voted, most people did not approve of the merger with Romania.

Russia, which inherited most of the Soviet Union's land, has been resolutely opposed to the merger of Moldova and Romania. However, with Romania's accession to the EU and NATO, once Moldova and Romania merge, NATO's power boundary will be pushed eastward again.

As a result, the strategic buffer space left for Russians will become smaller and smaller, and Russia's situation in the international community will become worse.

Therefore, Moldova must exist in a neutral form, so as to ensure that there is enough strategic buffer zone between Russia and NATO. This is also the fundamental reason why Russia opposes the merger of Moldova and Romania.
