Hainan Island, located at the southernmost tip of China, is the second largest island in China. Hainan Island was formed in the middle and late Neogene about 654.38 million years ago. Hainan has become an island separated from the mainland because of the subsidence of Qiongzhou Strait caused by crustal fault blocks. It covers an area of more than 32,200 square kilometers. After 1988 was established, the land area of the whole province was only 3535 1 km2, accounting for 0.35% of the national land area. It is the smallest province in China, but it is the largest maritime province in China.
