How to feed raw meat to cats
How to feed raw meat to cats? To put it simply, everyone who belongs to the cat family knows about tigers, leopards, lions and other carnivorous animals. Therefore, cats are naturally capable of eating raw meat. After all, no one prepares canned food and cat food for them in the wild. Returning to their natural way of eating not only has countless benefits, but it also benefits their bodies.
Eating raw meat and bones can make their fur smoother and better, regulate their gastrointestinal tract and eliminate bad breath, and chewing meat can have the effect of cleaning their teeth. The difference between cats and dogs is that cats don’t need carbohydrates (that is, staple food) and vegetables.
Let’s talk about the specific contents of raw bones and meat
Muscles (meat and heart): The muscles here are not just the simple meat of chicken, duck, and beef that we eat in daily life; Includes heart and gizzards. The total proportion is 80%
Liver: a kind of internal organ, it is necessary. The total proportion is 5% (do not exceed 5%. Feeding too much liver can lead to va poisoning)
Other internal organs: such as kidneys, brain, etc., not necessary but better. The total proportion is 5%
Bone: It is a bone (but it is not a big bone like a leg bone, but a softer bone like a chicken neck, quail, or chicken). Remember that bones are not You can feed it cooked. When cooked and hard, it will easily scratch the cat's esophagus. Many owners don’t like to eat bones, so they can use eggshell powder or the calcium powder in picture 7 instead.
How to make eggshell powder: Tear off the inner membrane of the eggshell and bake it to dry out the moisture (bake in the oven for 10 minutes at 180 degrees), then grind it into powder and put it in a small jar to seal it. Add it when cooking meat.
How to take the first step
Before trying raw meat, it is recommended to eat pure canned food for 3-5 days in a row, so that the cat can better accept the transition from plant protein to animal protein. Transformation.
And all raw meat and bones must be frozen for more than 48 hours before feeding (to reduce the activity of microorganisms)
First of all, let me talk about how my cat accepted raw meat and bones from the beginning. I bought a large piece of chicken breast and cut it into two small pieces (about 2cm) for her to try. She licked it for the first time, then picked up the piece of meat and ran to the corner to eat it slowly. Then she still ate canned food every day, and gave her two pieces of meat at night. Two days later, I bought chicken hearts and chicken gizzards to feed her. I cut them in half, and she could accept them. The harder the gizzards were, the more they had to be chewed. a while. But liver! She refused this kind of food at first. I mixed some canned food into it and fed it to her before she could accept it. (I also heard that some steamed the liver, minced it, and mixed it into a can.) Anyway, within five days, she basically accepted all the raw meat! Later, I bought some chicken necks and quails and cut them into small pieces. She could chew them for you! (So ??don’t underestimate their chewing power)
The above is a simple feeding method every day: two pieces of meat, a piece of heart, a small piece of liver, a small piece of chicken neck with bones or quail. This feeding method lasted for about two weeks. I realized that I had to prepare for long-term feeding of raw meat and bones, and I had to become professional!
Then I bought an extra large stainless steel basin! It is used to make cat food for many days at once, so that I can easily add supplements without having to melt and cut the meat every day.
Choice of raw bone and meat
Choice of meat: chicken, beef, mutton, duck, venison, kangaroo meat, rabbit meat, turkey, crocodile meat, bird meat, Camel meat... chicken heart, duck heart, sheep heart, chicken gizzards, duck gizzards... there are just some meats that are less common, but they can all be fed. For example, my family has eaten all the things listed above...but my cat doesn't like camel meat very much
The choice of internal organs: chicken liver, duck liver, sheep brain, beef kidney...this kind of thing
Choice of bones: chicken necks, duck necks, quails, broilers (whole young chickens)
Recently, I discovered a new option: called minced meat (it’s the minced rabbit and minced meat I marked in the second picture) Kangaroo mince) This is minced whole, including internal organs and bones. Therefore, you can also choose to use this method for bone intake. However, it is not recommended to only feed this kind of minced meat, because cats need pieces of meat to chew. Just eating this kind of minced meat can easily cause the cat’s teeth to deteriorate and cause dirt. I always feed them meat chunks and minced meat.
How much raw meat and bones should be fed
It is reasonable to say that it is 4%-6% of the adult cat’s weight
If your cat is very fat and does not like to exercise, 4% , if the very active kind has a certain amount of exercise, it will be 6%, and for that kind of milk cat, it will be 8%.
Basically, adult cats are fed 2-3 times a day. My cat eats canned food in the morning and raw meat at noon and night. Leave 4-5 hours between each meal. Feeding less often can lead to vomiting, while feeding too frequently can lead to diarrhea.
How to cook raw meat
First of all, prepare the tools: kitchen scissors, a large stainless steel basin, disposable plastic bags, electronic scales, measuring spoons (teaspoons), A cutting board and a pair of rubber gloves (bring them on when handling the meat).
For meat, heart and internal organs, prepare them in the proportions agreed upon at the beginning. I usually choose two types of meat (for example: beef and chicken. For heart, I might choose duck heart, chicken liver, or minced rabbit). In this way, you can eat all kinds of meat and it is not easy to have more flavors. greasy.
First cut the meat into pieces (large and small pieces can be used to train their chewing ability), then rinse them clean to remove the blood and throw them into a stainless steel basin. If the heart is too big, it will be cut in half, washed and thrown into a basin. The liver will be disgusting to pack. Weigh the amount and throw it into a basin. Cut it into small pieces with scissors. Try to make sure there is liver in each bag. Then if you also buy minced meat, just like the shrimp paste in hot pot, cut a small opening and squeeze it out. The amount squeezed into each bag is almost equal, and the weight can be calculated.
Okay, now you have a pot of muscle and offal mixture. It’s time to start adding egg yolks! The amount of egg yolks is two per week. For example, if I want to make cat food for 30 days, I will add 8 egg yolks. After adding the eggs, now it’s time to add the nutrients.
My nutritional supplements are all marked in Figure 7. Let’s talk about them in detail here:
Raw bone and meat nutritional supplements
1. Calcium powder: It is used to supplement the insufficient consumption of bones. This is very important. If you do not consume 7% of bones, add 2.5ml (that is, 1/2 teaspoon) per 450g.
2. Taurine: It is used to supplement the insufficiently used heart. Although I have fed the heart, I still add some of this, because this can supplement the cat's vision and increase immunity. Just a handful for each meal, really just a handful.
3. Potassium iodide: used to supplement insufficient consumption of cooked mackerel, mackerel, saury, etc. One pill a week.
4.omega-3: Insufficient consumption of cooked mackerel, mackerel, saury, etc. Two pills a week. (Fish must be fed about 100g of cooked fish a week! If not, use potassium iodide and omega3 to supplement it)
5. Elm bark powder: regulates the gastrointestinal tract. A handful every day, about 1/8 teaspoon.
6. Fish oil: I forgot to take a picture here. It is the kind of fish oil from vbve that people take. I always buy the fish oil sold in Australian pharmacies (it is in the form of capsules, just pop it and squeeze it out, and it is in the form of tablets. Just break it into pieces) 10000-20000 milligrams per day. There are also some nutritional supplements that I recently bought from China that I haven’t fed yet: Vitamin B (to supplement duck meat, duck liver and egg yolk that is not used in sufficient amounts) Vitamin E (daily supplement needs) like A lazy person like me puts all these nutrients in according to the dosage when making cat food, because when you make it, you know how many days it will take, so just put it in according to the dosage, basically thirty days Just a teaspoon. As for how to measure milligrams, it is actually the amount of 1-2 tablets. It doesn't matter if it is too much, but it doesn't matter if it is less. Because every element is necessary for cats.
Then stir everything in the basin in front of you. Then the bagging begins. Seal well and place in the refrigerator for more than 48 hours. Before each feeding, place it in the refrigerator to thaw naturally or bring it to room temperature. Just eat it within 1-2 days after thawing. In fact, when you feed breakfast in the morning, you can take out the meat for lunch and dinner and defrost it. Pay attention to feeding when it is at room temperature, otherwise it will cause diarrhea.
Notes
Cats fed raw meat and bones may be infected with parasites, but as long as they persist in deworming, they will be fine. External deworming is performed once a month, and internal deworming is performed once every three months.
Raw meat and dry food cannot be fed together, as it involves the conversion of plant protein and animal protein. If the transformation is not good, the cat will become a spray machine. It is recommended to feed raw meat and canned meat together, because there will be some trace elements that some nutritional supplements cannot add, so ensure a balanced nutrition. Recommendation: From dry food to raw meat and bones, feed pure canned food for 3 days +, and from raw meat and bones to dry food, feed pure canned food for 7 days +.
Okay, that’s basically it. The above experience and purchase are based on the coordinates of Australia - Melbourne. If there is a city in the same city, nutritional products can be purchased on eBay and iherb websites. Buying meat is not a big problem in China, but remember to buy reliable meat! Reliable meat! Reliable meat! It’s the kind of meat that everyone can eat. All the meat that my Xixi eats can be used to cook it for us to eat. Nutraceuticals should be available on Taobao, or the version shown in my picture from overseas.
