Does Korea allow dual citizenship?

South Korea allows dual citizenship under certain conditions.

Foreigners who were born in Korea before 20 10 and have dual nationality must "give up foreign nationality completely" when choosing Korean nationality. The nationality law revised on 20 10 stipulates that "renunciation of foreign nationality" is changed to "commitment not to exercise foreign nationality". From 2011,Korean nationality and foreign nationality can be retained simultaneously.

Dual citizenship in Korea applies to:

1. Children of foreigners born in Korea can retain their nationality until they are 22 years old. At the age of 22, they agree to choose their nationality and sign an oath not to exercise their nationality rights in Korea.

2. Marriage immigrants who have joined Korean nationality while maintaining their marriage.

3. Immigrants who have made special contributions to the Korean country or outstanding foreign talents.

4. In the past, Korean nationals lost their nationality and made special contributions to Korea or were recognized as outstanding talents.

5. Adopters who were adopted by foreigners as minors and want to regain Korean nationality.

6. Overseas compatriots who have obtained foreign nationality and have lived overseas for a long time and have returned to China permanently after reaching the age of 65.

7. It is impossible to give up foreign nationality if it is not my will and restricted by overseas laws and systems. It is designated by presidential decree.

8. Persons who have acquired involuntary dual nationality

Legal basis:

The Korean Nationality Law stipulates that Koreans with dual nationality must choose their nationality before the age of 22. If they choose Korean nationality, they must give up their foreign nationality. If you don't make a choice, you will lose Korean nationality.

South Korea's "amendment" stipulates that if you promise in writing not to exercise foreign nationality rights in South Korea, you can continue to have Korean nationality.

South Korea's Amendment also stipulates that outstanding foreign talents who can contribute to national development in the fields of science, economy, culture and sports can apply for Korean citizenship at any time. When foreigners are naturalized in Korea, the time limit for finally renouncing foreign nationality is also extended to 1 year.
