The history of Songkou Town

Songkou Town has a long history. Since ancient times, there has been a saying that "Songkou does not recognize the state". During the Ming and Qing Dynasties, it was already one of the most prosperous towns in Jiaying Prefecture (today's Meizhou). The population density and commercial prosperity exceeded other towns and regions in Jiaying Prefecture (now Meizhou). After the founding of the People's Republic of China, Songkou Town ushered in a new stage. During the commune period, Songkou Town was divided into Songkou Commune and Songkou Town. Songkou Town included Wei Town and the surrounding 5 management areas, while other places were included in Songkou Commune. After the reform and opening up, Songkou Commune was changed to Songbei Township, which is the predecessor of today's Songkou Town. Songbei Township Wei Town was established in the Datang Management Area and Shipan Village Management Area, and later the Sikeng Development Zone was added. In the mid-1990s, Songkou Town was merged into Songbei Township, and Songbei Township was officially renamed Songkou Town. The new town government was located in Datang Village and later moved to Sikeng Village in Songbei Township. After entering the 21st century, Songnan Town and Songdong Town surrounding Songkou Town were successively merged into Songkou Town to form New Songkou Town. Songkou Town has officially become the largest town in Meizhou.
