The Mingzishan Reservoir was first built in 1952. After many expansions, the current dam height was 26.5m in April 1990. The reservoir risk relief and reinforcement project was completed in 2005.

Mingzishan Reservoir is located southwest of Baoshan City, at the foot of Mingzishanzhai, Denggao Village, Lujiang Town, Longyang District, 98°55' east longitude, 24°55' north latitude, and the dam site elevation is 1099m. The river it is located in is the upper reaches of Heilongdong River, a small tributary of the Nu River on the left bank of the Ma River. It is 28km away from Lujiang Town and about 60 kilometers away from Baoshan City. The reservoir mainly diverts and stores runoff from the Ranzao River on the southeast side. The reservoir controls runoff area of ??105.94km2 (including: 5.79km2 in the local area and 100.15km2 in the diversion area).
