U.C. (Cosmic Century) In 0079, human beings developed into the universe and built many huge satellites, which enabled human beings to live in the universe. The residents of the satellite could not bear the exploitation and oppression of the federal government of the earth, so they declared their independence and formed an army to fight it out with the federal government of the earth.

During the war, the two sides successively developed mobile armor and put it into the battlefield. Amuro Ray, a young boy of NEWTYPE, accidentally drove Gundam, a newly developed mobile suit of the Union Army, got involved in what was later called the "One Year War" and met his old enemy, Charles AzNabl.
