According to the Hong Kong (British Nationality) Order 1986, a person who has obtained British Dependent Territories citizenship because of his relationship with Hong Kong will lose his status on 1 July, 9971and cannot continue to use his BDTC passport.
However, they can apply for the BN (O) passport on or before 30 June, 1997, while eligible persons born before110/0/June can apply for the BN (O) passport on1997. From 1 July, 19971day, only Hong Kong residents who already hold passports can renew their passports.
According to the second point of the Interpretation of the NPC Standing Committee on Several Issues Concerning the Implementation of the Nationality Law of the People's Republic of China in the China Special Administrative Region, all Hong Kong compatriots and compatriots are China citizens, regardless of whether they hold British Dependent Territories Citizen passports or British National (Overseas) passports.
And from 1 July, 19971day, you can continue to travel to other countries or regions with valid travel documents issued by the British government, but you shall not enjoy the right of British consular protection in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and other parts of People's Republic of China (PRC) by holding the above-mentioned British travel documents.

According to Article 18 and Annex III of the Basic Law of the People's Republic of China (PRC) SAR, the Nationality Law of the People's Republic of China has been implemented in the SAR since July 1997. Considering the historical background and reality of Hong Kong, the implementation of the Nationality Law of the People's Republic of China in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region is explained as follows:
1. All Hong Kong residents of China descent, those born in China (including Hong Kong) and others who meet the requirements of China nationality stipulated in the Nationality Law of the People's Republic of China are China citizens.
2. All Hong Kong compatriots and China compatriots are China citizens, regardless of whether they hold British Dependent Territories Citizen passports or British National (Overseas) passports.
From 1 July, 19971day, the above-mentioned China citizens may continue to travel to other countries or regions with valid travel documents issued by the British government, but they shall not enjoy British consular protection in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and other parts of People's Republic of China (PRC).
3. British citizenship acquired by any China citizen in Hong Kong as a result of the British Government's "Right of Abode Scheme" shall not be recognized according to the Nationality Law of the People's Republic of China. These people are still China citizens, and they are not entitled to British consular protection in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and other parts of People's Republic of China (PRC).
4. China citizens of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region who enjoy the right of abode in foreign countries may use the relevant documents issued by foreign governments to go to other countries or regions, but they shall not enjoy the right of foreign consular protection in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and other parts of People's Republic of China (PRC) by holding the above documents.
Five, China citizens of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region to change their nationality, can hold valid documents to declare to the organs of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region that accept the application for nationality.
6. Authorize the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region to designate its Immigration Department as the organ for accepting nationality applications in the Region, and the Immigration Department of the Region will handle all nationality applications in accordance with the Nationality Law of the People's Republic of China and the above provisions.
