Introduction

The Wittgenstein family contributed an iconic philosopher, Ludwig Wittgenstein, to the 20th century. A traitor to this prominent Viennese family, Ludwig ended up making the name Wittgenstein famous throughout the world. His immense reputation seems to have overshadowed the stories of his equally extraordinary brothers and sisters, including the world-famous pianist Paul Wittgenstein. What kind of family environment did Paul and Ludwig grow up in? What kind of family origins and family similarities do their characters have? This book tells the story of Paul, Ludwig, their sisters Hermena, Gretel, and other relatives and friends. This is a true story of a house of music and conflict. It is also a human tragedy and comedy, a history of the rise and fall of a family, and the two world wars that ran through the 20th century. It can be said to be a symbol and microcosm of that era.

Editor's Recommendation

Who would give up all of his huge inheritance and at the same time draw up a strict agreement that would prevent him from acquiring the property again? Who would use only one left hand to play music on the piano that requires ten fingers and tour the world stage? Who could invite Klimt to paint his portrait? Which family can invite musicians such as Brahms, Joachim, and Richard Strauss to their own concert hall to enjoy first-class private concerts?

There are many illustrious families in the world, and those who so remarkably combine wealth, music, philosophy, eccentricities, and tastes are both love and hate, joy and sorrow, both glorious and tragic, both Jewish and Jewish. Aryan, perhaps only the Wittgenstein House in Vienna.

Alexander Waugh’s superb writing skills vividly interpret the legendary movements of pianist Paul Wittgenstein, philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein and their families.

Recommendations/Media Reviews

It is surprising that the story in this book is so gripping and compelling, yet it has never been told in this way... …It’s hard to imagine another narrative that’s as fluid, witty, funny, and nuanced as this.

——"Literary Review"

A work that combines real discoveries and wonderful stories, an unforgettable biography that is difficult to ignore.

——"London Evening News"

Waugh expertly marshals a wealth of complex matters about wealth and psychology without getting in the way of telling the story of the central characters. His writing is sharp, confident, and colorful, and the book is a joy to read. ——The Telegraph

Even in the conspicuous Vienna of a hundred years ago, the Wittgenstein family stood out for its fatalistic eccentricity... Waugh makes us enchant us on every page he describes. The anecdotes of cultured eccentrics, intellectuals, philanthropists and misanthropes are all astounding.

——Blumberg

Excellent! An astonishing book that perfectly blends awe-inspiring scholarship...with observation of the absurd...it is an intellectual pleasure to read and deserves to be known to more readers.

——"The Independent"
