The origin of the Jingpo people is related to the ancient Qiang people on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. In the Tang Dynasty, their ancestors appeared in Chinese history books and were called "Xunjue people" and "Gaoligong people". From the Yuan, Ming and Qing Dynasties to the founding of New China, names such as Yichang, Shizuizi, and Yeren appeared one after another. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, China was recognized as the Jingpo ethnic group through national recognition.

The ancestors of the Jingpo people are related to the ancient Qiang people. They once lived in the southern mountainous areas of the Kangzang Plateau and migrated south along the Hengduan Mountains in the 7th to 9th centuries. The eastern Jingpo people are located in the Jinsha River area east of the Lancang River. The Jingpo people in the west are from the west of the Lancang River to Myanmar. From the 15th to the 16th century, due to wars, a large number of Easterners moved westward. After the 16th century, they immigrated to the Dehong area in large numbers and lived together with the De'ang, Achang, Lisu, Han and other ethnic groups. The Zhongjingpo, Lange, Wazhi and Laji branches of the Jingpo people are originally different tribes of the same ethnic group.

The Jingpo people have five branches, namely Jingpo, Zhawa, Lashi, Lange and Bora. In most areas, people from different departments live together. The Jingpo language belongs to the Sino-Tibetan language family of the Tibeto-Burman language family. The languages ??of the four branches, including Zawa, are relatively similar and all belong to the Burmese branch of the Tibeto-Burman language family. There are two languages, Jingpo and Zhawa, which are phonetic scripts based on the Latin alphabet. The former was established at the end of the 19th century and the latter in 1957.
