Mogao Grottoes is the largest grottoes in China, commonly known as Thousand Buddha Cave. Located at the eastern foot of Mingsha Mountain, 25 kilometers southeast of Dunhuang City, it is about 1600 meters long. It was founded in the second year of Jianyuan in the Qin Dynasty (AD 366). Up to now, there are still 492 grottoes in the Sixteen Kingdoms, Northern Wei Dynasty, Northern Zhou Dynasty, Sui and Tang Dynasties, Five Dynasties, Song and Xixia Dynasties, Yuan Dynasty and other dynasties, with 45,000 square meters of murals and more than 3,000 colored sculptures. It is the largest and most complete treasure house of Buddhist art in the world.
Mingsha Mountain in Dunhuang is one of the world-famous wonders of Shaming Mountain, which was called Shajiao Mountain and Shensha Mountain in ancient times. Located 5 kilometers south of Dunhuang. There are five colors of sand: red, yellow, green, white and black. Sha Feng is a typical pyramid dune with undulating sand ridges like blades. The wonder of it is that when tourists slide on the sunny beach, they will make an unforgettable noise like an airplane motor. Crescent spring is a jade-like spring surrounded by Mingsha Mountain, which is shaped like a half moon. The spring is as clear as a mirror, surrounded by reeds. It is 218m long from east to west and 54m wide from north to south. The average water depth is about 5 meters, and the deepest part is more than 7 meters. It is said that Gu Quan is famous for its abundance of iron-backed fish and seven-star grass.
Yumenguan, also known as Pan Xiaofang, is located about 90km to the west of Dunhuang. It was named after Yu Meiyu was transported to the Central Plains.
Yangguan, located on the "antique beach" in Nanhu Township, about 70 kilometers southwest of Dunhuang, is named Yangguan because it is located in the south of Yumenguan. These two passes were built in the third year of Emperor Ding Yuan (BC 1 14). They were important military strongholds in ancient times and the only place where the Silk Road passed.
Other tourist attractions in Dunhuang include the White Mata, the ancient city of Dunhuang, the ancient Thousand-Buddha Cave and the Wowachi.
