Deeds
p>Lange was born in New Jersey, USA. He suffered from polio as a child and was left with a lifelong disability. When she was 20 years old, by chance, she met the portrait photographer Nord Kinser. Kinser was moved by Lange's sincerity and agreed to teach her photography and gave her a camera. This was the first camera Lange had ever received in his life. In 1919, Lange established his own photography studio. In 1935, she became a photographer for the Farm Security Administration.
Lange is best known for his documentary work reflecting the Great Depression. Her works make people feel a strong sense of social responsibility. As critics said:
The images Dorothea Lange creates reflect the courage and dignity of human beings, especially those in humiliated and repressed situations.
In 1933, the Great Depression reached its peak in the United States, and 14 million people lost their jobs. Many of them wander blindly without shelter and sometimes without food. About 300,000 people came to California in the hope of finding work. These immigrants from all over the country are called "migrant agricultural workers". They move from one place to another in dilapidated vehicles.
As a photographer for the Farm Security Administration, Lange traveled to 22 states in the United States and took many photos reflecting the tragic scenes of the Great Migration. Her own disability makes her more empathetic to the suffering of others and closer to her subjects. She photographed people receiving relief and homeless people sleeping outside unemployment shelters, "People Waiting for Benefits" and "Seasonal Workers Mother", which became her classic works.
Lange’s outstanding achievements in social documentary photography earned her the Guggenheim Award in 1941. She was voted second among the 10 famous female photographers by readers of American Photography magazine
Her work
"Migrant Mother" reflects the face of the Great Depression Photo: "The Wandering Mother" - Dorothea Lange (Dorothea Lange), 1936 As far as photos that represent an era are concerned, "The Migrating Mother" is unparalleled. For many, the face of Florence Owens Thompson perfectly reflects the Great Depression, thanks to legendary trainee photojournalist Dorothea Lange. Lange captured this photo while visiting a dusty pea-picking camp in California in February 1936. In doing so, she captured the resilience of a proud nation in times of crisis.
"People Waiting for Relief" was taken in 1933. The protagonist of the photo is a man in ragged clothes. He is leaning on the railing, holding a broken teacup between his wrists, waiting for alms. Although his eyes were obscured by the brim of his hat, his frustration and despair were obvious.
