During the Qianlong period of the Qing Dynasty, the area that was historically known as the Western Regions was also known as Xinjiang.
However, there were four Xinjiangs in the country at that time: one was Wumeng Prefecture in Yunnan Province (in today's Zhaotong and Yongshan areas), which was called Xinjiang, and the other was Guzhou in Guizhou Province (today's Rongjiang) was called Xinjiang. It is called Xinjiang. Thirdly, the western part of Guizhou Province, which is now Anshun City and Chaikuang County, is called Xinjiang. Fourthly, Dajiachuan and Xiaojinchuan in Sichuan are called Xinjiang. In the end, over time, there was only one Xinjiang.
Tsarist Russia occupied Xinjiang in 1871. It was not until 1875 (March of the first year of Guangxu) that the Qing government ordered Zuo Zongtang, who was over sixty years old, to supervise the military affairs of Xinjiang as the imperial envoy and regain Xinjiang. At this point, Xinjiang finally returned to the embrace of the motherland.
