There are six dialects in Shanwei, namely Fulao Dialect, Hakka Dialect, Vernacular Dialect, Jami Dialect, Military Dialect and Northern Dialect. Some people who speak Chaoshan dialect may be Chaoshan people.

Fulao dialect is the main dialect. Fulao dialect is mainly distributed in Shanwei, Haifeng and Lufeng. According to its phonetic features, it can be divided into eight-tone films and seven-tone films, represented by Haicheng dialect and Donghai dialect respectively.
