Since his work, Meng Wei has been mainly engaged in scientific research on environmental protection in coastal waters, water environment and ecological protection in river basins, estuaries and coastal zones, site selection for safe landfill disposal of wastes and environmental impact assessment. He used to be one of the technical directors of the National Bohai Sea Blue Sea Action Plan, the technical director of the Immigration Environmental Action Plan of the National Three Gorges Construction Engineering Committee, and one of the main finishers of the major consulting project "Bohai Sea Environmental Improvement and Resource Development Strategy Research" of China Academy of Engineering. It has played an important role in responding to sudden environmental accidents in Songhua River.
