The number of overseas Chinese

A research report titled "China's Overseas Chinese Enterprise Development Annual Report 2010-2011" published on August 23, 2012 pointed out that in the past two decades, the number of new overseas immigrants from China has been increasing at an accelerating rate. Not only has the number of overseas Chinese in various parts of the world, especially the United States, Canada, Australia, Europe, and Africa, increased rapidly, but it has also rapidly changed the pattern of local Chinese society.

The report pointed out that the number of Chinese in North America increased sharply from more than 2 million in 1990 to 5.5 million in 2010. The number in Europe has surged from hundreds of thousands to more than two million, and in Africa the number has surged from tens of thousands to nearly one million. The growth rate was faster from 2000 to 2010. For example, the number of Chinese in Spain soared from 28,000 to 150,000, and the number of Chinese in the United States increased from more than 3 million to nearly 4 million. The number of investment immigrants to the United States increased tenfold in 2011 compared with 2007.

The report said that Chinese people live in urban areas. In North America, cities with more than 500,000 Chinese people include New York, Toronto, the San Francisco Bay Area, Los Angeles, Vancouver and other places. Southeast Asia has formed urban areas where more than one million Chinese live, such as Singapore, Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, Jakarta, etc.

The report stated that new immigrants and Chinese businessmen in Europe, Africa and other places are also becoming increasingly active, showing an unprecedented situation. Southeast Asia is the largest traditional Chinese settlement area. Because of its large base, new immigrants are easily overlooked. The report cites the latest research results of Professor Zhuang Tutu's team at Xiamen University, which shows that the number of new Chinese immigrants in Southeast Asia is as high as 4 million.
