Brief introduction of Xinhe street

It is said that there are many lanes in Xinhe Street in the urban area, but most of the 72 and a half lanes in Xinhe Street are difficult to find the whole picture.

The north-south trend of Xinhe Street is one of several traffic arteries in Wenzhou city. The dense and circuitous old lanes on both sides of Xinhe Street are also one of the symbols of the old city of Wenzhou. It can be said that Xinhe Street witnessed the vicissitudes of Wenzhou's urban development and change. After the renovation and widening of the old city a few years ago, Xinhe Street can no longer find its former appearance. Only old people will recite the past Xinhe Street and seventy-two and a half hutongs under the banyan tree.

There are about 60 alleys where traces can still be seen, and more than a dozen have been completely demolished. Half of the "nameless alleys" no longer exist. Even the alleys we can see at present are basically only a section or a small part, and almost no alley is well preserved. The buildings preserved in the alley are mainly in Ming and Qing styles. Among them, Youth Square is one of the few alleys with relatively complete preservation and distinctive architectural style. With the deepening of the transformation, the existing part will be slowly dismantled and transformed. In the face of new buildings that have sprung up, the time for alleys to withdraw from the historical stage is approaching.

Xinhe Street and its seventy-two and a half hutongs have undergone several changes, and the composition of the surrounding residents is constantly changing. Xinhe Street witnessed the development of Wenzhou city and the migration of Wenzhou people. At present, 72% and a half of the residents are mostly "immigrants" who have migrated from Wenzhou and its surrounding areas. Most immigrants are Qingtian people. People from different regions come together and different customs and languages meet and collide here. Until today, there are still some obvious differences in Wenzhou dialect accents and words used by residents around Xinhe Street. Especially for the elderly over 60 years old, a large number of people's non-Wenzhou city accents are quite obvious.
