Cape Verde (Portuguese: República de Cabo Verde), referred to as Cape Verde, is an Atlantic island country located on the west coast of Africa. Before independence, it was a colony of Portugal. The country's name "Verde" means "green" in Portuguese. The population is approximately 500,000, a quarter of whom live in the capital Praia. Cape Verde is located in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, between 17° and 15° north latitude and 22° and 25° east longitude, about 455 kilometers away from the Cape Verde Peninsula in Senegal, the westernmost point of the African continent. Cape Verde is mainly composed of 10 islands and 8 islets, which can be divided into two parts: the Windward Islands in the north and the Leeward Islands in the south. Small outlying islands include Branco (Portuguese: Branco), Hasselblad (Portuguese: Razo), etc. Cape Verde lacks natural resources, but due to its small population, political stability, and tourism alone, it is enough to become a comfortable country in Africa, and its quality of life ranks among the best in Africa. In addition to tourism, the main economic sources include immigrant remittances, agriculture, etc. The main trading partner is Portugal, and other trading partners are the European Union, the United States, Brazil and China. On July 23, 2008, Cape Verde officially joined the WTO and became the 153rd member of the organization. Controlled by the subtropical high and the trade wind belt all year round, the Canary cold current on the west coast cools and humidifies the area, forming a tropical desert climate, with the temperature maintained at around 25 degrees Celsius throughout the year. Cape Verde has two main seasons: the rainy season from August to October and the dry season from December to June. Precipitation is irregular and drought has occurred.
