Wu Sangui's uncle is a great soldier. Why is the tomb in Canada?

In the history of the late Ming and early Qing dynasties, famous soldiers came forth in large numbers. Although Wu Sangui later betrayed the Ming Dynasty, he was once a young brave general, and his family was also full of stars, such as his father Wu Xiang and Wu Sangui's uncle Zu Dashou.

Zu Dashou, a native of Ningyuan, is now Xingcheng, Liaoning Province. It is a livable town, but it was a very important military town in the late Ming Dynasty. Yuan Chonghuan became famous in the battle of sticking to Ningyuan.

Zu Dashou was a military officer of Ningyuan Health Institute for generations, and his father Zu Chengxun followed a generation of famous Liaodong company commander Li Chengliang, who was promoted to deputy company commander of Liaodong because of his outstanding military achievements.

Zu Dashou also started as a junior officer and was promoted by the meritorious military service. In the first year of the apocalypse, he served as a subordinate of Wang Huazhen, the governor of Guangning, and served as a guerrilla for the Chinese army. After Wang Huazhen's defeat, the Ming army was scattered. Only Zu Dashou led his men to break through to Juehua Island and stick to it, and the military talent and courage began to be valued by the court.

Soon, Yuan Chonghuan, the most important confidant in his life, came to the Commissioner's office. Yuan Chonghuan trusted Zu Dashou very much and sent him to guard Ningyuan City. On the one hand, he trusted his military talents; on the other hand, because Zu Dashou himself was a native of Ningyuan, it was obligatory to defend his hometown.

Zu Dashou did live up to Yuan Chonghuan's trust. He helped Yuan Chonghuan defeat Huang Taiji's attack twice and held Ningyuan City. Later, he was sent to Jinzhou, which is more important, as a guarding city task, and his performance was also excellent.

Unfortunately, he was besieged by Huang Taiji in the Battle of Daling River. After holding on for several months, he had no food and had to surrender. In order to express the sincerity of surrender, he also killed He Kegang, the lieutenant who refused to surrender. Huang Taiji was overjoyed and met Zu Dashou with the most precious waist-hugging gift from Jurchen.

Zu Dashou also suggested to Huang taiji that he was willing to surrender the Ming army in Jinzhou City. After Huang taiji agreed, Zu Dashou once arrived in Jinzhou, but he put up the banner of resisting Qing Dynasty and defended the city for the Ming Dynasty again. I really don't know what he thought. If the original surrender was a false surrender, then why kill the loyal and unyielding He Kegang? This has become a historical mystery.

In short, Zu Dashou returned to the camp of the Ming Dynasty. Emperor Chongzhen was very happy, and specially sent people to Ningyuan to build the merit archway of the ancestral family guarding Liaodong for four generations.

until he was betrayed by the Mongols in Jinzhou, he surrendered to the Qing Dynasty again.

This time, instead of being capricious, Zu Dashou wrote to surrender his nephew, Wu Sangui, who was guarding Shanhaiguan.

Zu Dashou finally got a happy ending, which is rare among famous soldiers in the late Ming and early Qing dynasties.

Later, his tomb was also luxuriously built, with exquisite stone tablets, stone workshops and stone figures. Even after his nephew Wu Sangui rebelled, Zu Dashou's tomb was not affected.

It was not until the end of the Qing Dynasty that in 1919, an English fur merchant bought his tomb and moved it to Canada as a whole. The stone of the tomb weighed more than 1 tons and was completely preserved in the Ontario Museum in Canada.

Some historians have also verified that this Canadian tomb may also belong to Zu Dashou's son or nephew. The evidence is that a tablet suspected of Zu Dashou's memorial was also found in Xingcheng, Liaoning.

This is another historical mystery left by Zu Dashou.
