Is interstellar migration feasible?
To build such a closed ecosystem, the only object we can emulate is the earth. However, the ecosystem on the earth is huge and complex. How easy is it to simulate such a system? However, if this problem is not solved, it seems that the dream of human migration to other planets can only stagnate. At least before humans discovered a livable planet like the earth. On the other hand, even if humans find such a livable planet, if it is far away from the earth, far beyond the reach of human aircraft, it can only be an empty joy.
Therefore, the success of a closed system simulating the earth's ecosystem seems to be the main threshold for human interstellar migration at this stage. However, scientists have begun to explore its feasibility. The research carrier is the famous Biosphere II.
Biosphere 2 is a closed ecosystem built in aarak, north of Tucson, Arizona. The name Biosphere 2 is used because 1 is the earth, and Biosphere 2 was built on the basis of simulating the earth.
The whole Ecosphere 2 covers an area of 6.5438+0.3 million square meters and consists of sealed steel frame structure and glass. It is divided into different functional blocks, including human habitats, agricultural areas, industrial areas and necessary biological communities. It depends entirely on independent ecosystems, including atmospheric system, water circulation system and animal and plant system. To explore the feasibility of this closed system in space colonization.
Since it is to explore the feasibility of space migration, human participation is an essential part. So after the completion of Ecosphere II, eight selected volunteers were sent to Ecosphere II for a two-year experiment.
Just when everyone was expecting a breakthrough in this research, various faults and problems appeared in the ecosystem. First of all, there is a problem with the food supply in the ecological circle, and it is impossible to be self-sufficient only by planting and raising in the circle. Then there was a problem with the water circulation and purification system in the ecosystem. Drinking water can't be used. It has to be filtered again before it can be used.
In addition, biological species began to be out of balance. Most beneficial insects died, resulting in crops unable to pollinate, while pests proliferated and plants began to die in large numbers. Although all eight people persisted to the end, due to the shortage of resources, there were many contradictions between them, and even everyone had psychological problems to varying degrees. There is no denying that the experiment ended in failure.
Of course, scientists and investors have not given up the experiment because of this. After modification and improvement, seven volunteers were sent to Ecosphere 2. However, various problems still appeared this time, which eventually led to the experiment not being carried out after half a year. As for the experimental results, the research team has never announced them to the outside world.
After that, the research work of Ecosphere 2 stopped until the whole land was sold and the main body of Ecosphere 2 was handed over to the University of Arizona for further research before it was taken care of again. Unexpectedly, however, during the period when Ecosphere 2 was abandoned, the plants in it grew well, many animals survived and the proportion of beneficial insects and pests returned to normal. In a word, after humans left, Ecosphere 2 actually returned to an excellent state on its own.
This makes people feel sad. Is it human intervention that makes Ecosphere II full of problems? And what happened in Biosphere 2 is not a microcosm of the impact on the earth after the appearance of human beings?
Perhaps, when people are planning to leave the earth to colonize other planets, they don't know that human beings are forcing human beings to embark on this road?
