Ye Zhizheng was born in Nanjing in 1918. He grew up in a ruined merchant family, and his family life was difficult in his childhood.

In his early years, he engaged in the study of carbonate rocks, initiated the classification of structural genesis of carbonate rocks in China, and put forward the principles and methods of identifying sedimentary environment by using the overlapping structure of algal limestone. Early marine geological surveys were deployed and organized in 196s. In the early 198s, he was engaged in the study of sedimentology in the marginal seas of China. The sedimentary mechanism of late Pleistocene sediments in Okinawa Trough is summarized for the first time, and it is considered that it has the basic characteristics of biological source, volcanic source and turbidity current. In the study of Xisha reef deposition, the sedimentary sequence and facies model of late Pleistocene biogenic sandstone limestone and paleosol layer are put forward for the first time. At the same time, the existence of aeolian sediments in the South China Sea of China during the last glacial period was affirmed for the first time, which provided important information for paleooceanographic research.
