Maybe this is a joke of fate. Max met Zef, a Nazi guard who killed his family in Auschwitz concentration camp in the nursing home, and recognized him at a glance. But because Zev fled Europe, he disguised himself as a persecuted Jew, and everyone played happily together in the nursing home. This is also an indirect irony of war. After a while, Zef's wife Ruth passed away. Zef himself suffers from Alzheimer's disease and often forgets things. So Max took advantage of Zev's forgetfulness and wrote a letter under the pretence, and told Zev that this letter was his wife's last wish, hoping to fulfill this wish seven days after her death. In fact, this wish was completely fabricated by Max using Zev's love for his wife. Otherwise, Zev wouldn't have that great motivation to finish it. After all, they are all elderly people, and no one has that much energy to hunt them down thousands of miles away. This revenge trip was after the defeat of Germany at that time. Four Nazis fled to the United States under the pseudonym of Rudy Crander. They successfully immigrated and remained anonymous. One of them, Rudy Crane, was an enemy of Max. Max asked Zef to find this man and kill him.

Personally, I feel that the director deliberately exaggerated Zev's nostalgia for his wife, and the only purpose of Zev's wife stalk is to give Zev the motivation to complete this plan. Under Max's careful explanation and arrangement, the silly Zev secretly left the nursing home with Max's letter, and Max kept calling Zev to remind him to follow the instructions in the letter step by step. First, Max arranged for Zev who got off the train to go to a gun shop to buy a gun, and the first climax of the film began. Zev hasn't used a gun for many years, or he deliberately forgot to ask the clerk questions about guns. At first, the clerk recommended a Zev gun, and then immediately replaced it with a world-famous gun Glock made in Austria. The allusion here is that many German military factories supported the front line by occupying factories in Austria and Czechoslovakia. Pro-German troops from Austria and Czechoslovakia sold their national sovereignty and took refuge in German fascism. In the gun shop, as a German veteran, Zev seems unfamiliar with guns, which is also the foreshadowing of the screenwriter.
