Steps to apply for a non-immigrant visa

To apply for a non-immigrant visa, please follow the following steps.

Step 1: Select the visa type.

1, visa type:

1) business/tourist visa (B 1/B2)

2) Student visa (female, male)

3) Exchange Visiting Scholar Visa (J)

An exchange visiting scholar sponsored by the US government.

2. Get a work visa of approved type (H, L, O, P) in advance.

1) Transit/Crew and Crew Visa

Visiting scholar sponsored by American government (J)

The special application procedure is applicable to these applicants who participate in federally funded educational and cultural projects (indicate that the serial number of such projects begins with G- 1, G-2, G-3 or G-7 and is printed on the DS-20 19 form to prove the qualification of exchange visiting scholars).

They can submit their visa applications at the American Embassy at No.55 Anjialou Road, Chaoyang District, Beijing from 9: 00–11:00 every Monday to Friday. They don't need to make an appointment or pay a non-refundable application fee. Please check our holiday/closing time in advance.

Materials required:

1)DS- 160 form confirmation page.

2) Form DS-20 19 (Exchange Access Qualification Certificate)

3) Passport: If your passport will expire or be damaged within six months of your expected arrival in the United States, or there is no blank visa issuance page on your passport, please apply for a new passport before coming for an interview.

4) Photo: A recent color front photo of 2 inches by 2 inches (5 1mm x 5 1mm) taken in 6 months. Please see the photo requirements for details. Please stick your photo on the cover of your passport with scotch tape.

5) Resume: We suggest that you bring your English resume, including your previous study/research fields, published publications and an introduction to your job responsibilities.

Step 2: Complete the online DS- 160 application form.

Please fill in the online non-immigrant visa application form DS- 160 and print out the "Confirmation Page" with barcode.

Note: If your online application form DS- 160 does not provide complete and correct information, the Embassy will not consider this application. You will be asked to update or modify your DS- 160 form before returning to the embassy to complete the application procedure.

Step 3: register through the appointment center, pay the application fee and make an appointment for your interview.

There are two ways to book an interview; You can use the online reservation system or call the operator of the reservation center to make an appointment. There is no extra charge for these two services.

Please select the branch of China CITIC Bank where you intend to collect your passport and visa (if approved).

When you get the payment confirmation number, you can use UnionPay debit card to pay the application fee online or through the reservation center. You can use UnionPay debit card or cash to pay at any branch of China CITIC Bank. After payment, you can continue to enter the appointment interview calendar page to make an appointment immediately. There is no need to do anything extra or pay other fees.

If you prefer cash payment, the reservation website will generate a bank deposit receipt according to the interview type you registered, which shows the amount you need to pay. You must print out this bank deposit slip, exit your reservation website, go to the local CITIC Bank branch, show your bank deposit slip and pay the required amount. You will get the original transaction receipt at the bank. Then log in to the reservation website again and enter your bank receipt confirmation number in the specified column. After entering the confirmation number, you can continue to enter the appointment interview calendar page.

Step 4: Interview at the visa location you choose (not all applicants need to come for an interview).

According to your scheduled interview time, please don't queue up at the embassy more than 30 minutes in advance. Food, pistols, weapons or any liquid, including drinks, hand sanitizers and antibacterial glue, are not allowed to enter the embassy. All electronic devices are also banned, including mobile phones, photography, cameras, radios and computers. There is no storage place here, so if you bring the above items, you will be refused entry by the embassy and need to make a new appointment for an interview.

Step 5: Get your passport and visa at the CITIC Bank of your choice (if approved).

When you make an appointment interview in step 3, you have chosen a local CITIC Bank to collect your passport and visa (if approved). If you need to change or check the location of CITIC Bank you selected, please visit the reservation website or call the reservation center (see step 3): 5679-4700. There is no charge for this service, but the change of passport collection place can only be made before midnight on the day of your interview, which means that the change time ends at 1 1: 59 pm.
