This statue depicts freedom from shackles and holding a lighthouse to illuminate the world. It is the work of French sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, who created this statue one hundred years after the American Revolutionary War in recognition of the unity between the French and American people (although it is fair to say that bartholdi originally intended to dedicate this statue to Alexandria in Egypt). Bartholdi built Liberty in Paris from 1874 to 1884. Starting with a clay model, it was expanded to its present size through four successive versions.
