Why has the Turkish army been guarding Suleiman Shah's tomb?
It is said that Suleiman Shah drowned in the Euphrates River and was buried near the so-called "Turkish Mausoleum", located in Jabbar Castle, which is a holy place for Turks.
According to Article 9 of the Ankara Treaty signed by France and Turkey, Jaber Castle is within the sovereignty of Turkey.
1973, Jabir Castle was flooded by the newly-built Tabaqah dam storage lake. After consultations between the Turkish and Syrian governments, Suleiman Shah's tomb was moved to Aleppo province near Kara kozak, Calaque.
Today, a group of Turkish national gendarmerie guards this symbolic place. The mausoleum and that place are the only enclaves in Turkey.
