Information about Huangmei Opera

Huangmei Opera: Formerly known as "Tea Picking Opera" and "Flower Drum Opera", it is one of the major local operas in Anhui Province. With its beautiful tunes, lively performance forms, easy-to-understand artistic language and rich and fresh life breath, it is deeply loved by people all over the country and overseas, and has become a famous new drama in China.

Huangmei Opera originated from the tea picking tune in Huangmei County, Hubei Province, and was later combined with folk songs and dances. During the light years of the Qing Dynasty, the descendants of Anqing, Huaining, Susong and Wangjiang absorbed the singing art of folk music, and Yuexi Gaoqiang, Qingyang Qiang and Huizhou Qiang developed rapidly, so they were also called "Huaiqiang" and became folk operas with local characteristics in Anhui. Huangmei Opera is famous for its lyrical singing, which is full of charm and beautiful. Singing can be divided into two categories: Pingci and coloratura: Pingci is the main singing in the original work, which is often used for lyric and narrative; Coloratura is mostly folk songs and minor tunes. In the performing arts, focusing on refining programs from life can not only show the content of actions, but also show the meticulous thoughts and feelings of characters. The main accompaniment instrument is Gao Hu, with other national instruments and gongs and drums, and then formed a band combining Chinese and Western. Famous actors include Yan Fengying and Wang Shaofang. Their plays, such as Beating Pig Grass, Watching Lights by Couples and Immortal Match, are well-known and widely circulated among the people.

The traditional repertoire of Huangmei Opera is called 36 major dramas and 72 minor dramas, but there are actually more than 200. Fairy match, Zhu Men breaking, mother's tears, etc. It was made into a movie, while Yao Zhixing's Flower Village and Being Old and Being Many, were made into TV series.

Huangmei Opera developed rapidly with Anqing as the center. There are Huangmei Opera Troupe and Huangmei Opera School in Hefei and Anqing, and amateur opera troupes in rural areas. Jiangsu, Hubei, Fujian, Jiangxi, Jilin, Zhejiang and other provinces have also established professional Huangmei Opera Troupe.
