The predecessor of the African Union is the Organization of African Unity, which was established on May 25, 1963. On September 9, 1999, the Fourth Extraordinary Summit of OAU adopted the Sirte Declaration and decided to establish the African Union (hereinafter referred to as the "AU"). In July 2002, the African Union officially replaced the OAU.
