Why can't there be great Internet companies in Hunan?

Up to now, there are no platform-level Internet companies in Hunan, and there is indeed a lack of online startups (there are but not so many). However, Hunan has a large population and the Internet infrastructure is quite good. This set of contradictions seems strange. There have been rumors that Hunan officials have reflected on why Alibaba was not born in Hunan and why there is no Ma Yun in Hunan. However, this round of reflection, if any, seems to have no effect.

I think the real reason lies in the following aspects:

First, the layout and planning of universities make it difficult for college students who are most likely to start businesses.

There are two top universities in Beijing: Peking University and Tsinghua, and there are also two top universities in Shanghai: Fudan Jiaotong University. Fudan University in Peking University, Tsinghua Jiaotong University. Tsinghua, Peking University is located in Zhongguancun area, in downtown area, and the communication between industry and campus is convenient. However, in Changsha, Huda Normal University, which is biased towards arts and sciences, is hiding in Yuelu Mountain, a sparsely populated place.

Second, Changsha is not a cluster city.

In fact, starting a business is a very "mental illness". In the eyes of many people, there is no need to bet on a small probability of the future, not a mental illness. The road to entrepreneurship is full of hardships most of the time, and emotional comfort is actually very important. Only entrepreneurs can understand entrepreneurs, and Changsha just lacks a cluster culture. In the bustling city of Changsha, entrepreneurs are extremely lonely.

? Third, life in Changsha is too rich.

This is my friend's point of view. In his view, although the cost of starting a business in Beijing is also high, Beijing is actually not suitable for life. It's blocked after work, and I'll work in the company for another hour or two before I leave. But in fact, there is no place to go at night, so let's play something (or get together, Beijing has a strong gathering culture, think about the grand occasion of 5G flowing water seats in those days). But Changsha is not. Changsha has many places for you to relax. A bustling place that stays up late is not good for entrepreneurs and ta's entrepreneurial team.

Fourth, Hunan people can tolerate new things, but their acceptance is not high.

This may be a bit of a contradiction, but let me give you an example:

/kloc-in the middle of 0/0, a large-scale random sampling survey was conducted on users in Weibo, and one finding was very interesting: the places with the largest number of users are: Beijing, Guangdong, Zhejiang, Jiangsu and Fujian. Yes, there is no Hunan. In 2009, Sina Weibo conducted an internal test. A year later, Hunan was not among the top five users in Weibo. New things will not be rejected in Hunan, but they will not be accepted immediately, especially by friends, and I also accept them.

Although Internet companies are doing so-called borderless business, they still have their regional characteristics. Promoting a new thing in Hunan has little chain effect. This is also the reason why many domestic corporate brands will consider winning the Hunan market after solving the problem of market share in many places.

Fifth, there is no real financial center in Hunan, nor is it a place where VC gathers.

As the financial center of Hunan, Changsha is very interesting. Many banks are here, but most bank headquarters are not here. Many investors will be in Changsha, but the head of the investment institution is still in Beijing. In particular, there are not many angels and A rounds in Changsha. This reason is mutually causal with the lack of entrepreneurial projects in Changsha.

Sixth, the planning of Hunan High-tech Park is not for starting a business.

Such as Lugu Lake. A place where big companies gather. It was built out of thin air in a deserted place, with few living facilities. The planning is quite atmospheric, and the road is paved with four lanes, but it is: there is no figure on weekdays.

Seventh, the media and entrepreneurs in Hunan lack the opportunity to be concerned.

? These media reports generally tend to follow the rules and pay little attention to new things and startups. Entrepreneurs lack the opportunity to be noticed.

Changsha is unlikely to become China's "Silicon Valley", but recently, Hunan officials attach great importance to "mobile Internet". The mobile Internet industry is the support of many Internet companies in the future. Even if there is no platform-level company with unlimited scenery on the table in Hunan, there may be a company under the iceberg: unknown but extremely important. Of course, it's just logical.

Looking ahead, where is the most likely to become China Silicon Valley?

I ruled out Hangzhou. Although there is Alibaba in Hangzhou, there have been small businesses in Jiangsu and Zhejiang since ancient times, and Alibaba just occupies the right place and the right time. In Jiangsu and Zhejiang, it is difficult to see a large number of platform-level companies. The Ali family alone cannot say that Hangzhou can become a Silicon Valley.

Actually, I also ruled out Beijing. After all, Beijing is still too expensive. The reason I mentioned earlier for starting a business in Beijing is precisely the problem that the Beijing government has to solve: it has never been a problem that a city is not conducive to life. With the solution of these problems, the soft underbelly of Beijing's high start-up cost appears-although today, China's "Silicon Valley" may really be in Beijing.

How about Guangzhou? In fact, Guangzhou is not an immigrant city. It's a high-risk business, and it's no different from digging gold mines in those years (so Silicon Valley is in California). High-risk enterprises usually flourish in immigrant cities. The reason why Guangzhou won the top spot in China's Internet industry is closely related to the gang of Guangdong Telecom.

A partner of the incubator Tianqi Fund chatted with me. In her opinion, this place has the possibility of China's future Silicon Valley. It is an immigrant city with a pleasant climate suitable for thinking (don't underestimate this, hehe). Although there are no particularly powerful universities in this place, there are particularly powerful technology companies, which are easy to cultivate entrepreneurial talents. The procedure of registering a company in Shenzhen is simple and important: China's Nasdaq is located in Shenzhen. My opinion of her is basically inclined to agree.
